Would you still homeschool if... - Page 2

Absolutely, positively, most definitely! Before we realized how easily we could homeschool, I was looking into doing just that - starting a cozy little school that would operate the way I wanted a school to operate. But the moment I realized that homeschooling was an option, I was delighted to just forget about any kind of school. A private school is still school, but "homeschooling" can be so much better, so much bigger, so much freer, so much more in tune with who the family is, who the child is, and where that unique child is going in life - not school at all, but an uncontained exploration of the world and all the amazing possibilities life has to offer. - Lillian

We'd still homeschool.

I think there is definite potential for little schools like that. There are a lot of people out there dissatisfied with their children's school who can't or don't want to homeschool.

I would still rather homeschool. I don't like the idea of taking on other peoples children. I might want to homeschool my own children but that doesn't mean I would have been a good school teacher, nope.

I especially wouldn't want to take on other homeschooler's kids, lol. I don't mean that negatively either. I just know most homeschooling parents that I know feel very strongly about what their child does each day, academically and socially. I don't think we could fit them all in one neat little school regardless.

No, I wouldn't, because a school could never function the way I homeschool. It's the home, not the school, that's the operative concept (for me) in homeschooling.

But I guess it depends on what you are looking for. If you're just looking for a certain method of education, a school that utilizes that method may please you. But if homeschooling is, to you, about more than the academics, then I think you'd be hard pressed to find what you are looking for in a school.

I have no interest in opening a school of any kind.

I guess one of my main reasons for hsing is to instill in my kids that learning happens ALL the time and is fun. That is difficult to do in a school setting, because you almost have to have a schedule and a curriculum. As Lillian said, homeschooling almost should not include the term "school" in some cases, because it's not school!

My DD decided to practice writing her numbers the other night at 8 pm. Would she do that even if she were in a school setting? I'd like to think so, but I can't say for sure. I have seen way too many kids internalize the idea that "learning only happens during school" and avoid almost anything that might be educational when they are not at school.

I would, not if I had to run it, but my kids would thrive on a flexible, one-three day/week co-op style thing ( and so would I).

I've fantasized about opening a school, but I don't think I'd really know what I was doing. However, if I could be involved in the right kind of small, flexible private school, then yes, I'd be happy to send my kids to it.

My pipe dream school, incidentally, looks something like Sudbury, only I think with more formal classes (e.g. you can set your own schedule and have free periods, but algebra is offered at 1:00 in Room A and if you sign up for it, you're expected to attend). But that's really just a daydream; I don't think it has any chance of succeeding.
