What if I miscarry?

I miscarried in January at 9 weeks. I found out I had a blighted ovum at my first prenatal appointment, and my doctor encouraged me to do a DnC instead of actually miscarry.

Of course I'm worried that I wil miscarry again. Today I was spotting and cramping. In case I do miscarry, is it really a trip to the hospital? Do I have to go to the ER, or if I see my doc and he sees that I am going to miscarry, should I really have another DnC? What is it like to actually miscarry?

I hate to bring up such a yuck topic, but it's really on my mind, and I don't like the idea of another $400 medical bill for a DnC if my little bean isn't sticking.

Some docs recommend allowing the body to naturally miscarry, and then doing a follow-up to make sure there is nothing "left behind". It is always your choice whether or not you agree to the recommended procedure.

This early one there probably wouldn't be a need for a D&C. But you can always play it by ear.

mama, prayers to you and your babe that this is just a scare...

Thanks ladies! I'm not spotting today which of course is good, but when I m/c before it was intermittant spotting - it's so hard to just relax and enjoy this pregnancy!

:

A lot of pregnancies do have a bleeding incident or spotting (I think I remember reading 30%), which I know isn't too reassuring but you're not alone.

I had some with my last DS, and it was scarry.

With my last pregnancy I miscarried at home. My midwife said that if I was soaking through more than a pad in one hour that I should go to the hospital. She also said that our bodies know how to take care of this and to trust it. Hopefully that isn't what is happening for you. Lots of healthy pregnant folks have spotting. Sending warm wishes your way.

I had spotting starting at about 10 weeks with my first, it would go on for a few days, stop for a day, come back... it went on intermittently for about 2 weeks. My mw told me to do the same thing shoelace said, in the event that I did miscarry, which I didn't. She did say it was somewhat common for unexplained bleeding in the first tri. She couldn't hear a heartbeat via doppler, so she prepared me for mc and set up a us for the following week to check for viability which is where we saw an active little bean with a strong heartbeat.

I know how scary it is waiting and wondering and hoping... I cried all the way home from her office that day. She was so casual about it, but to me this wasn't just a little embyo, it was my CHILD.

much love and prayers to you

I hope you're okay and the spotting means nothing. Pregnancy can be so terrifying after a miscarriage. I miscarried at 6 weeks and didn't need a D&C. I think miscarrying naturally can be easier (if it's early). But, because I did not yet have a provider, I ended up in the ER and that sucked! I was there for 10 hours and they did like 4 u/s and 4 internal exams plus blood tests and still couldn't tell me for sure, except that it seemed like I was miscarrying.

If I started spotting or bleeding again, I would not go to the ER. I would call my midwife, monitor and then ask for an u/s and bloodwork to be scheduled at an office - rather than the ER. Than you can figure if you're still pregnant, miscarried naturally and fully or need to schedule a D&C.

Good luck to you!

Again ladies, thanks so much! I am spotting again today - not surprising after working all day I guess. I have very mild cramps - which is just as nerve wracking as the spotting. Is it normal to have cramps with spotting? I don't think it's round ligament pain - it feels more like the cramps I get when I'm about to get my period.

Oh Jordana, I know the worry that you are going through and I wish I could take it away and stuff it in a big, deep, dark hole for you...

I am soo sorry for this. Please let us know how things go and if you need to, at anytime, feel free to PM me..
