another science question

What type of curriculum do you use for science? I'm particularly interested in middle school science. I've been trying to stay in line with what the schools in our area are teaching in each grade if at all possible. Our son seems to be bored or just "not getting the material" in his current curriculum. We are thinking of trying a different approach next year. Our son wants textbook type science and I don't want that. Although he does well with workbooks. My DH doesn't want me to spend money on something and thinks I can just check books out at the library on various topics when needed. I want something more centered around what the average 7th grader is learning. Does that make sense? I like things a bit more structured than DH and "I'm" the one that does the homeschooling. I want to buy something structured, used hopefully, but structured nonetheless.

Any ideas?

My son is loving the Joy Hakim serious of books. He has found projects to do to prove what ever topic he has decided he wanted to test. Drawn out/diagram stuff, et.
