How to knit?

I have this incredible urge to knit wool soakers. I did a bit of knitting years ago, like making a huge scarf. But I totally forget how to do it. Is it possible to learn how to actually knit and follow a pattern, by reading directions off the internet? If so could somebody direct me somewhere. I see patterns I would like to knit, but I don't even know what to do with the needles and wool. I think it will come back to me, I just need a refresher.
