Waxing...???

Okay not sure where else this would go but I am dying to know. After having my kids I have found my hair on my lip is darker. Maybe I am crazy (4 kids can do that to ya) but I swear it wasn't that dark. I am Hispanic with toffee colored skin too and my hair is almost black.
I have never waxed before. For my eyebrows I usually nair the random hairs and then tweeze to shape.

So I have been thinking about waxing my lip. It is really bugging me.

How often do you do it?

Does it really grow back darker?

Do you do it at home or go to the salon?

Is your skin underneath the hair lighter? ( I have hear people waxing their lip for the first time and the skin under the little hairs is lighter so it looks funny)

Can someone help me? I am so confused about this. I just want the hair gone.

THANKS so much,

I do mine myself. If you do it yourself, you have to take special care to make sure you wipe the wax in the direction of the hair, and pull directly against the hair. Also use a good wax. If you're not careful, you can give yourself ingrown hairs, and that's no fun.

Otherwise, it's a slightly painful 2 seconds that goes by quickly.

I do mine every 2 or 3 weeks. I used to get it done professionally, but it gets expensive.

Yep, that.

Also, for most people, waxed hair grows back lighter/thinner over time (it sometimes takes a few times, but tends to weaken the roots...).

Shaving is what makes hair grow back darker/thicker...

As for skin color under the hair, it depends on how much hair you have there. If you have enough of a mustache that your skin there is less tan than the rest of your skin, then yes it will be lighter at first (until the tan catches up with the rest of your face)... but if you don't have enough hair to prevent even tanning, it probably won't be lighter than the rest of your face.

I wax eyebrows/mustache/ jawline/chin. I don't do huge patches on my face, just problem areas. I use hard wax so no paper strips. Just apply while warm, wait until it hardens, then RRIIPP! I've been doing it since I was 12!

My hairdresser does mine. I'm actually going to have my eyebrows and lip waxed today! It hurts like a sunuvabitch, but it lasts quite a while (for me, anyway--about 3 weeks or longer), and she only charges me $10 if I do eyebrows & lip at the same time. I haven't had any problem with the skin being lighter underneath or the hairs growing back thicker/darker.

This keeps getting perpetuated and it's just not true. No hair removal method makes hair grow back in thicker or darker. If you were to let the hair grow past stubble you would realize the hair is just as thick or fine or light or dark as it always was. When you cut the hair on your head, does it grow back darker and thicker? It doesn't. How could it? A strand of hair when cut shorter can't magically start growing from the root darker and thicker.

Cutting and shaving blunts the hair which effects how light hits it.

Technically, yes, you're right. I should have written: "Shaving is what makes hair look like it grows back darker/thicker..."

It *does* look thicker and darker until it's completed a full growth cycle... Not just growing back to its previous length, but also falling out and growing a new hair. Because the individual shaved hairs do not have the thinner tapering tips (from natural growth) they used to have anymore.

Waxing, however, pulls out the roots (when done right)--which does weaken the roots and for many people will reduce the amount of individual hairs that grow and the thickness of each individual hair (over a very, very long time of consistent waxing--years).

I just had mine done at the beauty shop this week- totally worth it and I will be maintaining this routine. I suppose I could have done it myself- but why bother with how inexpensive and quick it was!

You could look into getting the hair permanently removed through laser treatment and/or electrolysis (I think that's what it's called).

But waxing works just fine, too.

Warning: I'm posting a pointless post

Aw...a close friend of mine just had her lip hair removed yesterday. I loved that she was so comfy with herself that she had a little unaltered mustache.

But her partner's grandma just died and the "ILs" pressured her to shave it for the funeral. She was so depressed about it last night that I think she may have been on the edge of crying.

When you wax it, doesn't it leave you bruised?

I would not try to wax my lip at home. I went to the salon and had it done and it hurt like hell. Bikini waxing and underarm waxing got nuttin' on upper lip waxing (cause I wax those too from time to time)!

go some where and pay the $10-20 and have it done

I make my own "wax" and do it myself at home.

So I have been thinking about waxing my lip. It is really bugging me.

I wax my upper lip, legs, and bikini area.

How often do you do it? Every 2-3 months for lip, 4-6 weeks for legs

Does it really grow back darker? No, it grows finer and thinner eventually b/c you are damaging the root.

Do you do it at home or go to the salon? Honestly, I prefer the salon but it costs too much money for me right now so I do it myself (or recruit my DH for the back of my thighs.

Is your skin underneath the hair lighter? No but I'm white like Casper. ;-)

I actually do sugaring which is just like waxing but a little less painful. The sugar substance doesn't stick to the skin just the hair, unlike wax.

To make the "wax" combine 2 cups sugar, 1/4 cup water, and 1/4 cup lemon juice. Bring to a boil and turn down to low. Cook until it reaches soft ball / hard ball stage. I use a thermometer b/c the color of the wax differs depending on the type of sugar you use. Conventional refined sugar produces a really light wax, where as organic, less refined sugar turns a caramel color.

The first time you wax will be the most painful, I have to say. To minimize the pain, pull the strip fast and in a backward direction and not straight up. Immediately put press on the waxed area to minimize the discomfort.

For your first time, I would recommend going to a salon unless you really just don't have the money. Then you can focus on maintenance which is easier IMO.

I don't agree with this. When I was younger I had tiny, baby fine blonde hairs on my legs up until I was 14 and I shaved them off for the first time. I've gone over a month without shaving my legs on several different occasions and it has always come in thick and black. I have never had those tiny blonde hairs ever since that first shave I tried believe me!

for the lip i love the nair lip stuff. probably has creepy ingredients but it takes everything off in like 3 min painlessly. the eyebrows i have waxed. luckly my chin and side-face don't need it, but i'll probably slather nair there too if i ever do.
arms, legs and baby hatch i shave, i actually think it makes the hair grow in softer! I've been shaving my arms since i was 13 religiously and now it hardly grows at all.

i love to talk about hair removal.

Back in my young, single days, when I had more disposable income, I had mine done at a salon. About 2 years ago, I started doing it at home. It's really easy, and so much cheaper. It does hurt, but just for a few seconds. I've heard it hurts worse for fair skinned people (and I'm about as pale as they come), so YMMV.

I was using some cheap-o brand- I think it was Sally Hansen, but last time I found a brand called Surgi Wax that I just used yesterday, and that was much better. It even comes with a lotion to use afterwards, and a redness reducer.

Another option is to get the pro stuff at Sally's, but that's more $$. It will last a long time though.

I do mine every couple of months. No lighter skin issues, and it grows back lighter and thinner by far for me.

umm, sweety? that's around the average age when hair darkens. i'm inclined to think that it was coincidental.

shaving will not alter the hair growth. it will only, as previously pointed out, blunt the edge, which can alter the appearance 'til it grows out.

Oh, yeah, hair removal

I love the salon treatment, but so expensive. 14 for lip, 14 for brows. Now I get my brows down only at the spa place, becasue I have dark think hair and I screw up the brows. I am VERY picky about who does my brows. JCPenney has messed them up 2 times, and that was 2 times too many.

For my lip I use these sally hansen wax strips. I bought a box 4 years ago, and have one left. You rub them together to heat up the wax and then stick them on and rip them off. They work great. I also used them for some belly hair that appeared during pregnancy.

Unlike a pp, I thought underarm waxing was by far the most painful waxing experience of my life. It was awful. Brows and lip dont even make me flinch.

honestly im soo scared of waxing, that and i really can't afford it.. so i shave everything, my eye brows, my legs.. and elsewhere..

I wax my lip @ home too, I pluck for eyes! I used a homemade was that is sugar based with lemon juice. One batch lasts forever (last batch was made 2 years ago & I still use it) I store it in the fridge.
Here is the recipe
Sugar Wax
