what's your favorite sock yarn?

Thread Starter
I'm almost finished with my 1st pair or socks, knitted with Shi Bui sock yarn. This yarn is *beautiful* and an absolute dream to knit with, but I'd like some other options for future sock knitting, as Shi Bui can be rather $$. I prefer merino wool or a blend. I cannot wear alpaca--makes me itch like crazy.

So, what are your recommendations?

peace, Beth

I really like KnitPicks Felici. Not a big fan of their other sock yarns, but I REALLY like this one, super soft, self striping, and washable!

When I have more $$ my all time favorite is the Bamboolicious (I think it was formerly just called bamboo/wool/nylon blend??) from Zen Yarn Garden. Roxanne is fantastic to work with too.

I'm fully addicted to buying yarns on Etsy. I have a whole list of favorite sellers I love Tempted, Have you any wool? , and Tanis Fiber Arts.

I'm just starting to make socks, but am enjoying Socks That Rock from Blue Moon Fiber Arts. A little on the pricey side but I LOOOOVE the colorways.

tofootsies (or something like that)- it is beautiful and pretty light. I don't know what all sock yarn costs but this is like $16/skien. but it only takes one and one will probably make 1 pr big socks and 1 pr little one.

I've only made a few pairs of socks so far, one pair was with shi bui, and it was awesome. My latest pair was from Auracania Multi, and so far it's my favorite sock yarn. Very soft, beautiful colors, and it's dyed in such a way that makes it very hard to pool. On the pricey end though. I did have some pooling problem with the shi bui. I've also tried Regia Silk blend, which was great, and Trekking XXL. The trekking was easy to knit, and it was a pretty good price. The socks were for my dad, so I don't know personally how they feel on, but he says they're awesome.

Socks that Rock is awesome.
Lorna's Laces is great.
Mountain Colors -- lovely to work with.
Regia is a workhorse, as is Opal.

I've had some 100% wool socks die on me so I stick with the true "Sock yarn" -- nylon blend -- from now on. I am happy to hear the good review of Felici as I just ordered some of that. Will have to check out the Etsy sellers next!

I don't have lots of sock experience...but I've used tofutsies for one pair. I did not like knitting with the yarn, it seemed very splitty to me, but I've adored the finished items.

Cabletini socks

I made a pair of socks for my mom to wear with her ski boots from
Schoeller + Stahl Fortissima Colori Socka Color and I was so very pleased with it. Mainly, I needed to make the stitches as tight as possible since these guys would be seeing tons of work, and I was really pleased with the fabric they produced. Slightly scratchy (but I only wore them to try them on, washed them, and sent them to mom, so they might have softened) but it seemed to be a really really nice and durable sock. Also, loved, loved, loved, the striping.

Ski boot socks

I've also made two sets of little socklets out of Austermann Step yarn - lovely to knit with and my husband loves his pair. But I've found them to be a little saggy - but it could be because I didn't knit up past the ankle. However, the finished socks are really really nice to wear.

Forgot to say, my philosophy on sock yarn is to just buy it when I have money if I like it I can always use it for swaps if I change my mind (not that I do that too often!) You can always justify it to yourself that you're just looking for a new favorite

I like Koigu yarn for socks.

Would it be possible to knit socks with this yarn? I have a bunch I was going to sell but I am thinking of gifting it to a sock-knitting friend if it would work for that.
