Well, they get all their immunities by 6 mos...

There was a meeting at church and I was in the nursery with another mom (her baby is older and not nursing anymore). She asked me if I had gotten all my "issues" worked out with nursing. So...I was giving her an update and how we'd finally found a decent ENT, but even he thought it was too late in the game to do anything. I told her I was pumping, but was nowhere near making enough for him.

She said, "well, they get all their immunities by 6 mos. so if you're ready to stop pumping, then you should."

Boy...did I ever correct her!!!

I said, "well, recently we all had that horrible flu - stomach and all - and I was determined to pump through it. I think I literally got an ounce a day, but I would give him that ounce and he is the only person in our family who did not get sick."

She was like, "wow! really!? Do you think it was because of the breastmilk."

I said, "I'm absolutely convinced."

Hopefully she'll abandon the notion that they only need 6 mos. of breastmilk.

If you have an e-mail address for her you could send her to kellymom.

A few months ago, I was sick with the flu, while pregnant. I felt like I was going to die with the body aches, and the fever was making me delirious. My husband was feeling horrible too. My 2yo, who nurses maybe two times a day, just got the sniffles and was sleepy for a few days. That's it. The power of breastmilk!

I'm having the same experience right now. DH and I have the flu. DS had a mild fever for a couple of days. Breastmilk is magic!!

Well, DS has had 3 colds in 5 months and now has an eye infection (secondary to the latest cold). He is exclusively breastfed. Poor kid just can't catch a break. I'm disappointed cuz I thought bm was supposed to prevent all that. I just have to trust that it's doing something, even if it doesn't keep all the bugs away. But it's kinda hard for me to use my kid as an example of the healing powers of bm. :

Just imagine how sick he'd be without the benefits of breastmilk!

A child's immune system does not fully develop until their 7th year.
The average age of weaning worldwide is 4.3 YEARS.

Repeat as necessary.....

As the mother's breastmilk supply drops off as baby becomes a toddler and is eating more solid foods, the antibodies in the milk INCREASE so that even though the child is nursing less they are still getting the same amount of immune benefit from the milk. It is utterly amazing and awe-inspiring... and definitely the opposite of "no immune benefits after 6 months"... I hate that lie!

WTG Marcyc!

My dd, when she was 5 months old, got bronchiolitis. It looked only like a cold, sniffling, runny nose, etc, but since she was under 6 months, I decided to pop over to the ped to check it out. Turns out it was bronchiolitis. However, the ped told me that if I hadn't been breastfeeding, she would have recommended I go to the hospital with her. But since I was breastfeeding her, she was confident that with a few therapies and meds at home, she would be fine. Four days later, no more sickness. Of course, my ped believed in the power of breastmilk too, since she pumped for her (at the time) baby. I wish there were more peds like her.

Seriously?!?! That's so cool! Where'd you get that info from? My BF's husband keeps telling me, "Well he's gonna have to stop eventually" [he's only 6 mos old!!]. Their 3 kiddos were all FF and he just cannot wrap his mind around the idea that I will be bf'ing for at least 2 years.

Total crap. Actually, the immunities in your milk get MORE abundant as your baby ages.
