Sleeping Beauty??

My kids have an opportunity to go to a ballet performance of Sleeping Beauty.
They are taking ballet and really enjoying it. So anyway, my dh knows a professional ballerina and she invited us to an upcoming performance of Sleeping Beauty! I think this is a wonderful opportunity for them...but I would like to read the story to them ahead of time so they can better follow the story. We have not read any Disney and they have no exposure to this or other fairy tales. I thought I'd find the original story but that turns out to be quite intense and not something I'm ready to discuss with them...It involves a married man going into the woods, finding the dead/"sleeping" woman, having sex with her and she gets pregnant with twins and one of the baby sucks on her finger and dislodges the wooden piece and she comes alive....the guy returns to the woods to find the woman is alive and well and they fall in love...but his wife finds out about her and his kids and tries to have them killed....and on and on. I think this type of story would be a great story to look at and study and discuss with older kids...but at 4 and 6 I think they are too young for these heavy topics.
Is there a better version of this story...one that the ballet show is probably going to depict? Anyone have a version they think is a good start for young kids but still well written? I'm not a Disney fan but maybe that is where I should look? has anyone ever been to a ballet performance of Sleeping Beauty?

The ballet of SB is really pretty fluffy and your kids should have no problem with it. As I remember, it usually covers the blessing of the baby and the curse, a little of her growing up, the meeting with the prince, the finger pricking and general falling asleep, the prince defeating the evil fairy, the wake-up kiss, and the wedding with about 30 zillion fairy-tale-ish creatures performing for the couple.

I've worked on a couple of productions, but since I was in the orchestra pit, I wasn't watching the stage much. However, my dd1--who knows the plot of every ballet ever performed--looked over this description and concurs.

Have a wonderful time!!

We went to the ballet of Sleeping Beauty. There was nothing in it that would be upseting to kids. My five year old asked why the guy was a beast but that's all. He wasn't upset by it.

There is a great one illustrated by Trina Schartt Hyman, I'm not sure if she or someone else wrote it.
It's really nice and beautiful pictures.

I've been to multiple ballet productions of SB and I never saw anything that I would have any problems taking kids to see.

I've heard the story many times in my life, and have never ever heard the version you mention. I've always heard it as a very innocent story. Here's a wikipedia page on the story and it's variations:
Sleeping Beauty.

One of the things it links to is a StoryNory audio version you can both read and listen to. Lillian
