explain K2,P2 ribbing

I am learning to knit today. My pattern says "do 8 rows in K2,P2 ribbing".

Does that mean I alternate and do 2 knits stitches and then 2 purl stitches in the same row for 8 rows?

OR

do 2 rows of only knit and then 2 rows of only purl, 2 rows of only knit, 2 rows of only purl?
Thanks!!!

That one. Do, "Knit 2" then "Purl 2" and repeat that all the way to the end of the row. This will make a ribbing.

you can make 2x2 ribbing with any number of stitches that are divisible by 4. Just in case you wish to enlarge something like a baby hat into a toddler hat. As you learn more and more, you'll begin playing with patterns and changing things!
