Bad Leg Cramps

I am 37 weeks pregnant and every other night or so I wake up from stretching or moving in my sleep to a leg or ankle cramp. These are usually just weak little ones and changing positions with my legs or feet. None of them really hurt bad and they all go away pretty quickly.

So, this morning I woke up to a bad one. When I say bad you can picture someone writhing in bed and yelling in pain. Of course this happens the one time my hubby did not sleep at home. Removing the cramp caused three cramps in various other muscles in my other leg, all of them small. My legs have been cramping every since this whole morning.

Does anyone else get these? What do you do about them? What do you do to prevent them? I am afraid that while in labor I will get them and not be able to stay in a good squatting position.

Any suggestions?

Eat a banana a day, or every other day. I think it's the potassium in them that helps. I don't get them at all that way.

I did get bad leg cramps at the end of my last pregnancy. I didn't end up getting them in labour, but since that ended up in a c-section, who's to say that I wouldn't have if left to my own devices. I found for me the only thing that got rid of them was to put the foot on the cramping leg flat on the floor and bend forward at that knee, almost like a lunge, keeping the foot of the cramped leg as flat to the floor as I could. I have been reading Sheila Kitzinger's birth book, and she talks about supported "lunges" as one position to try during labour, so maybe if you do get them you'd be able to flex them out like that?

Calcium and Magnesium has been known to help cramps. It's worked for me anyway.

Ummm, are you me? The exact same thing happened to me this morning.

I've gotten them before and I just stand up and put my foot flat on the floor, like the PP. But this morning all that did was make the front of my ankle cramp up. After I got that to stop, my calf started again. It just went back and forth like that.

The funny thing is, yesterday for the first time in a few weeks, I ate a banana. That's weird.

Second the cal-mag. I have to never, ever point my toes when pregnant -- that triggers them like crazy. If I accidentally point my toes while stretching or otherwise feel one coming on or happening, I flex my feet upward as hard as I can, and that helps tremendously. Hope it was your last one, mama!

This is the advice I got from my nurse friend and it's helped. I don't like bananas, so she recommended apricots instead.

bananas really do help, as do tums!! They have a lot of calcium in them, and as a bonus, they also help with heartburn (something i struggle with a lot in pregnancy)
