What kind of compost container?

What kind of container do you use for you kitchen? Our municipal garbage collection company provides buckets, but they don't have holes or any kind of ventilation mechanism. What do you use before you make the big dump into the actual compost container?

Thanks,
Lydia

I just put it in an old crock with a lid.

i've used various contraptions. for a while i had an old kitty litter pail in the laundry room (off our kitchen). over the colder months i use a container without a lid on the counter because we don't get knats & it's so much easier not to mess with the lid. i've also used a lidded ice bucket with handle that i found at the goodwill & right now i'm using a small old step stool garbage can. i keep eyeing the compost pail from frontier, though. a friend of mine just got it & i'm sure i'll have pail envy when i see it.

I've been using a large coffee container that works well as it seals tight and so there's no smell.

i guess that was my "real" question. i saw one of these babies at the store and thought to myself, "what do the mamas on mdc use? i'm sure they've gotta much more creative (read "cheaper") solution. :-)

We use a glass mixing bowl that we keep in our freezer to keep down the smell and avoid bug issues. Then we just carry it outside to the composter every few days when it's full.

I've got a medium sized tupperware type cannister with a tight lid. I keep it under the sink, it gets dumped every day or two.

I have just barely started learning about composting and will be starting asap.

I came across this last night while researching.

It's a big pricey, but it did give me a few ideas on what to use for a compost pail..

I bought a crock, not because it was necessary, but because it was purty. Other people I know use a recycled food container (big plastic tub). I sometimes use an open bowl.

The freezer idea is genius.
