Probiotics freaking ROCK!

Just wanted to post a quick note about how freaking awesome probiotics are. A lot of my posts are getting moved these days over to "Life with a babe"-cause really that's where they should go... but you guys are my PEEPS and it's YOU I really wanna converse with, so I always put em here. Anyway, a week or two ago I posted about "Gassy babies" and said I was really having trouble with Katie from about 9-12 each night.

Some folks advised that I try cutting out dairy and getting her on a probiotic especially since she'd had ABX right after birth. WOW... I can't describe for you how much of a difference it made. If you are having ANY kind of issues with gassiness I can NOT stress enough how helpful it can be. We've almost completely eliminated her pain and crying.

I screwed up today and ate a cheeseburger and we were already paying for it an hour later... but the addition of her daily dose of l Rueteri and Bifido really helped calm her tummy within an hour or two. I'm still not sure we'll have an altogether pleasant night... but I KNOW it's gonna be much more bearable.

SO! if you get or end up with a colicky baby-get thee some probiotics!!! I sure wish I'd known about these with my first child!

Yay! I'm so happy for you! I also wish I'd known to do this when my last baby was an infant. Unfortunately, we ended up with all kinds of problems because of the abx, including dealing with food allergies now. Their little guts are so fragile. It makes me smile that your lo has had such a turnaround

Yep! And they're *so* much more useful in the first six months. There's lots of studies showing that probiotics work for all kinds of things... but for many chronic conditions, they stop "working" a little while after you stop taking them. Probiotic supplementation in the first six months of life, however, has a lasting impact on autoimmune disorders (following up with kids at 4 years of age IIRC).

And the cheeseburger is confirmation, eh? ;-) Now, you *know*.

That's great that they are working so well for you! So, do you take the probiotic and it's just transfered to your baby through your breast milk, or is there some sort of infant probiotic that you are giving her?

probiotics are safe for babes and you can just break open some capsule and let the baby suck on it (or if you pump put it in their milk). Just once or twice a day unless you have thrush, then more.

lurking...
what brand l. rueteri are you using? I'm currently giving my LO acidophilus/bifidus to counteract any damage the intrapartum abx (for gbs) may have caused.

Thanks!

I use this one.

Thats the brand I'm using too, but they also have it in a powder form. And, this is a really really good deal for it if you're interested in buying off the net.

To answer a previous poster, I just mix a teeny bit of Breast milk with the powder and give it to her in a small syringe. Since we're still dosing with viagra, she's used to this method and it works out just fine.

Yay, I'm SO glad that they're working for you! Isn't it amazing the things you learn on MDC that the rest of the world doesn't seem to know, LOL?

Not in your DDC (I'm March) but can I ask because I am very interested--I got b. infantis because that is what my health food store person told me I needed. Now, I do see an improvement, but you're saying it was like night and day with reuteri? How soon did it take effect? I'm VERY curious! I was also strep b positive and took those stupid abx without knowing about this side effect and ended up with a fussy babe. Poor thing. And like the previous poster said,

Well, we started Bifido about a week before the Rueteri... cause it was available at the local HFS. I must admit we saw major changes right away, but I believe it's really solidified with the Rueteri. Rueteri is the ONLY probiotic species that has been linked in scientific studies to a lessening of crying in colicky babies. But we've only been on that for a good 3-4 days.

Wow... I wish I'd known this with DS.

My poor little guy.

Are you using both now? or just the Rueteri? In the morning and evening or what timing?

I used a different brand with my DD - under the advisement of our NP, but she has sense moved away... I know many moms who have used the brand you are referring to - I was just curious on how much and when/what was administered... I bought both last night and have a DR appt today - I'm really looking forward to seeing great results like I did with DD. The girls are having a rough time of it right now

Well, we do 1/2 tsp of the l. Rueteri once daily, and while the SolaRay BabyLife (bifido) (one scoop -looks like about 1/4 tsp) recommends 2x daily, we do that just once, at the same time as the former. I can't say we're terribly consistent with WHEN we do it-just whenever I think about it during the day, though I do try to administer it right around the time of a feeding.

Has anyone ever used probiotics for allergies? I think my 7 month old son has allergies resulting in an itchy rash and eczema-like spots all over his body.

Nope, but I've heard it can really help with eczema. It sure can't hurt to try, can it?

True that!

Yes. That's not to say it "cures" the allergies; you still have to remove the offending foods, but if your child has an intolerance and not a true IgE allergy, it could help to overcome them. Also, a study showed reuteri helped cut down/eliminate eczema in some kids (but I think they still cut out dairy).

Check out the allergy forum. There's a lot of good information there.

nak

I am going to try this today. I had antibiotics because I ended up with an emergency c/s. I started taking Nature's Way Optima probiotics the day we came home. I've been taking it twice a day instead of just once since I want to avoid thrush and figured he was getting the good bugs via breastmilk. My other kids have gut issues due to celiac and many food allergies, especially my dd who had antibiotics as a newborn and yeast issues after that.

My poor little guy has a sore bottom right around his anus and I'm guessing probiotics can only help. No signs of oral thrush yet luckily! He isn't colicky so far either which was a big concern of mine after his birth, because my dd was super colicky as a newborn.
