Just trying to figure out what is happening... XPost to Preg & Birth Loss

I've had three miscarriages over the years... two that were around 9 weeks along, and the last at 20 weeks (no baby, just a placenta was born... don't know what happened there).

What's going on currently: I was really starting to have pregnancy symptoms. Nausea, increased appetite, lots of sleepiness, tender breasts, etc. I tested at 11 days past ovulation... BFN. On day 13, I had dark colored bleeding begin. The next day, I passed a large clot. I did not fish it out to examine it, but it was larger than I normally have during a period. Later that day (this was yesterday), I felt a heaviness in my pelvis and a weird tiredness in my legs that I usually only feel postpartum. I still felt slight nausea, extreme breast tenderness, etc. Today, my bleeding has reduced quite a bit. It is bright red, like my normal periods. But while out shopping my sense of smell kicked in something fierce. In early pregnancy, smells usually are very strong for me. When I'm not pregnant, they don't bother me much. So, today, I had the extreme smelling, nausea, still the postpartum feel to my legs... AACCKKK! I am getting mixed signals. I had pretty much resigned myself to having a very early miscarriage. But with pregnancy symptoms still appearing, I am very confused.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I'm just waiting to stop bleeding and see if I get a positive test. In the meantime, I am continuing to temp. My temps dropped slowly leading up to the bleeding and they have been slowly climbing ever since it started. Has anyone here miscarried a twin and still been pregnant afterwards?

I'm not expecting to find answers, but maybe a little solace in knowing I'm not totally crazy...

Thanks...

UPDATE for 4/21: Today's symptoms are the same, except my temp was lower and my bleeding is practically gone.

UPDATE for 4/22: Still sensitive to smell, nausea, temp jumped up. Only spotting now.

. I really hope you find some answers and peace of mind soon.

Take it easy on yourself if you can.

Thanks, Hesperia. I just need to stop obsessing about this and just wait and see.

when my mum was pregnant with me, she thought she miscarried because she passed a fist sized clot on the toilet. 5 weeks later, when she went for a regular health check, the doctor told her she was still pregnant! so my poor twin went down a toilet maybe?

That's the kind of story I was looking for, Alicia. Gives me a little hope. The nausea and smell sensitivity keep growing, so I'll probably test again next week if this continues. Thanks for sharing your mom's experience!

Thanks, Alicia. I do enjoy the children I have... we have been very blessed!

UPDATE: STILL spotting, crampy, nausea... I was so queasy yesterday I had to lie down and take a nap. Felt a little better this morning, but it is creeping back... bleh.

Has anyone POAS while spotting? Does the blood affect the test's accuracy?

I haven't POAs while bleeding or spotting, personally, but www.peeonastick.com says it won't matter. In fact, you can use straight blood (no pee, etc) on a HPT. Check out her section where she does weird things to tests.

I hope things work out for you!!!

You've got a lot of good options. You can wait and see. You could do a urine pregnancy test. You could do a blood test, perhaps two or more to see if the levels are rising. Depending on how long it's been since you last ovulated, you could get an ultrasound.

If it would bother you to not ever know if you miscarried, then perhaps some testing is in order - it's possible this is just a period, especially if you're older than 37 or so - periods occasionally do funky things for young women, but more often do funky stuff for women as we age. If I had to guess, I'd guess it's a weird period, but I don't know.

You could definitely be pregnant - either with a continuing twin or just a single pregnancy that is continuing.
Or, you could be miscarrying. I don't think there's enough information to know.

Do you need special care in early pregnancy - like progesterone, aspirin, RhoGam, etc? Do you have risk factors for ectopic pregnancy - if so, I would lean more towards getting more information.

Well, it's over. Thank you everyone for your advice.

I think it was definitely an early miscarriage. I spotted for a lot longer than normal, with continued preg symptoms that gradually went away. HPT was negative. Each miscarriage I've had has been different, just like each birth has been different.

I appreciate everyone's advice... you made me think about things more clearly and helped me realize I'm not alone and crazy. LOL

Apricot... I am older... 44 this year. No obvious perimenopausal symptoms yet. I have been truly blessed with my family, and if I don't ever get pregnant again, I'm fine. At the same time, if it happened I would still be excited to welcome another soul into our family.

It has taken some time, but I'm at peace with what happened. Thank you!
