i was wondering when this was going to come up.

I haven't been following this, but I was wondering why the children were taken from the mothers at all. From what I had seen, it was the fathers that were abusive, not the mothers. Is this true?

just to stay on topic in this section...there's a bunch of threads in the "current events" section of MDC like this one:

I was just posting here about the BFing moms. I would say this takes it a bit too far to pull the children who are still nursing away from their moms.

Too soon to tell.

I have not been following it much either, but I thought the younger kids didn't get taken away? That's horrible to separate a nursing baby from its mother. I hope this keeping on topic- if there is abuse going on I would rather see them taken away (nursing or not) than left there.

I agree.

I read in an article that they hadn't separated the younger ones yet, but they might be starting to. I'm not entirely sure. If they are being separated, would they be given formula? Would they allow the mothers to pump for the babies? I guess it would be kind of difficult for them to pump because I'm making an educated guess that they had never seen a pump before.

The point being made is that the mothers were allowing/encouraging the abuse. In the case of a child, if you witness a criminal act (of any kind) against a child and do not report it to the appropriate authorities, you are guilty of a crime. For example, Mom knows that her 13yo is being married off to 50yo man. Does/says nothing. That makes her guilty as well.

Also, the news reports I have seen say that the mothers who had children under 5 were told they could stay with their children. Many *declined* and chose to return to the "compound" (or church or whatever you want to call it). That right there makes me question their fitness as mothers.

Also, while I am incredibly Pro-breastfeeding... I would rather see a baby/child removed from the environment alledged here and fed formula than to remain in that. I loathe "rating" things like this ~ but formula is NOT worse than the accusations surrounding this church.

Thanks for clearing that up. As I said, I haven't been following the whole thing and I barely know anything about it.

To clarify, I definitely think that it's better to be taken out of the abusive environment and be given formula than to remain there and be breastfed.

This is so horrible. I am so saddened. for those who are guilty of abuse, fine..but to take 400 kids away?? THey are starting to take the nurslings away today from the news reports.

I have heard this from LLL Leaders in the area, but this is the first time I have read about it in the press.

No comment on the rest of the case.

This is a very sad situation for the mothers and babies. Perhaps once the courts sort out the DNA issues the mothers will be allowed to BF their babes?!!? However, who knows. . .this is such a sticky situation for all the parties involved.

I thought I'd read that none choose to go back to the compound.

Lisa, I completely believe you.

This is a hard thing... I don't think we will EVER know EXACTLY what has gone on here.

Part of me is upset... except, the question is WHY? Did the judge decline to rule b/c they have NOT actually been seperated yet? (which is what I gathered from reading the articles) There's all sorts of interesting legal issues here....

If the alleged abuse is being forced to marry an older man when you are a teen, I dont see why they have to seperate a baby from its mother now. Especially if the mother is cooperating and is living away from the compound with her young kids.
