Mattress Wrap-there has to be an alternative!

DS and I sleep-share.
I have a very nice (firm) mattress that is 8 years old, but has tons of life left in it. I read all about mattress off-gassing and recently purchased a polyethylene mattress wrap...I HATE IT!!!

It crinkles so loud and my top matress slides around on the box spring. There has to be another solution that does not include plopping down hundreds of dollars for an organic mattress.

I just use an organic cotton cover or a wool cove. I alos flip my mattress every time I cahnge the bed and open all the windows no matter what teh weather and let the room and mattress air out. If you worry to much tehn the worry will be the life of you and the mattress will just be secondary.

Where did you buy your covers? They sound like a much more pleasant solution!

Check this out:

http://www.amazon.com/How-Grow-Fresh...8832654&sr=1-1

It's written by a NASA researcher who studied houseplants and how they can absorb formaldehyde, benzene, carbon monoxide and dozens of other pollutants, and fight what he calls "new building syndrome.'

It sounds hokey but it's well written, informative and well documented. And it's a lovely book, with short how-to-care-for pages on plants, photos and a brief section on hydroculture that spawned a new hobby for me. Worth the money or a check at the library.

It's not going to solve the out-gassing problem, but it's an inexpensive and pleasent mitigating factor, anyway.

And what the PP said: ventilation. Flip and air the mattress, and ventilate the room as much as humanly possible. Many things in your home are off-gassing not just the mattress, including many of the materials the house itself is built from, so getting air moving through it is really your best defense against indoor air pollution of all forms.
