Baby gagging herself? Others?

Hi,
I'm still really new here. I have a question ... do any of your babies gag themselves? For some reason my 11month old baby girl likes to stick her finger down her throat and make herself gag. Sometimes it makes her spit up. Sometimes she laughs when she gags, sometimes she cries.

Occasionally it makes her burp so I wonder if that's what she is trying to do. She's done this for months it seems but has been doing it more. I also wonder if it's related to teething.

Any thoughts?

I introduced myself on the "Pleased to meet you" area but I just wanted to say thanks to all the Moms (and Dads) here. I've lurked for months and months and have gotten a lot of great advice.

Take care!

Well, my son is only 3 months old, but he does accidentally gag himself when he tries to suck his thumb. I don't think that's exactly what you're talking about, though. Does it seem like she's doing it on purpose?

Thanks for replying ... yep, she definitely does it on purpose. It's like a bad habit. I can usually distract her. I think my hubby and I used to laugh a bit when she first started doing it. I think we may try ignoring her when she does it. She does make funny faces when doing it and I'm sure we laughed. We are stopping that now for sure.

Take care.

My one year old does this on occasion as well. I don't get it, but he seems to enjoy it.

My DS (10mos) does this too. He likes to suck on his fingers and at times gets a little carried away and gags himself. I also think he does this on purpose because he will do it repeatedly....just after gaging. Maybe he likes the new/different sensation? I'm glad to know there are other LO's out there who do this same thing!.....it must be normal.

Thanks for all the replies. It's great to know my silly girl isn't the only babe that does this. Phew!!

Take care all!

... going to keep watching though to see what anybody else might say.

My 1year old nephew does this, much to his mother's dismay...

and I can remember doing it as a really young child, simply because, like a PP said, the sensation was really different/weird...never pukey or anything, just interesting. I wouldn't worry about it. (for the record, I don't do it anymore )

Yeah, my son is 3 months old, too. He gags himself all the time.

My son is a little over a year old and he's been doing this off and on for the last 6 months. It used to freak me out, but now I can tell he's just doing it because he thinks it's funny. He always laughs afterwards....crazy kid....

yep my DS does this too. She will suck or chomp on her fingers too far down on her throat and then gags. It really freaks me out in the beginning, now we just used to it.

my ds1 has been doing this for the longest time. he just turned three and is still doing it. not all the time or anything, but he will go through little phases where he does it a lot. i sort of think it is how some kids fake cough for attention. i never know whether i should acknowledge it or ignore it or what.

Gagging

Our second DD does this. It comes and goes, but I'm sure she's been doing it since she was around one. My guess is that the appeal has something to do with exploring and controlling your own body. We just ignore it.

my ds loved doing it on purpose, it gave him sensory input. He grew out of it.

My son used to do this all the time! ...I was never concerned because he would always laugh about it and he never did any harm to hismelf - He grew it out of it eventually! lol
It sure is odd though !!! lol

This is great reading all of these responses. It's so nice to know that my daughter isn't alone. We've tried to stop laughing and smiling when she does it and makes these little noises and she's cut it down a bit. I think she likes the sensation as some of you mentioned -- something different/new for her to experience.

Take care.

Yeah, its normal. My 11 month old started experimenting in this way a couple of weeks ago. If he continues/persists beyond one or two times or seems to be getting himself upset about it, I gently direct his hands away to another activity, and/or remind him that we don't want to gag ourselves - that it doesn't feel good on our throats.

Don't make a big deal out of it - redirection really is key. I'm sure baby will grow out of it.
