What to do when your dc outgrows commercial-free TV channels? - Page 2

OOOH we love MYTHBUSTERS, magic school bus, popular mechanics for kids, my DD just discovered 'pippi longstocking' and thinks shes a hoot.
Also get to you know your childrens librarian. They are a great resource. How about 'school house rock', possibly old copies of 'fraggle rock'
DS7 loves old reruns of 'this old house' kinda a step up from bob the builder..

its a fine line some days, more often then not i dont argue with them, my kids usually dont find commerical tv that interesting. They would rather be 'learning how to do ' something.

You can pick shows off the internet.

My kids like Ruff Ruffman, Maya and Miguel, Super Why, Word World, Design Squad, Mythbusters, How it's Made, Dirty Jobs, and Cash Cab. Generally, I find the cartoons and sitcoms aimed at early elementary to be pretty irritating. I'm glad my kids like "geek tv" like their parents.

This time of year, we also watch baseball.

Netflix

or dvr shows you can enjoy together. My 5yo loves watching Survivor with me, and some cooking shows off Food Network like Good Eats and Iron Chef.

I also dvr Pokemon for him and fast-forward through the commercials.

I agree those shows aimed at older children (Hannah Montana, ICarly, Zoey, etc) are annoying. My 6yo twin boys watch a lot of Discovery-- MythBusters, How Its Made, Dirty Jobs.. that show about the guy who survives with just a pocket knife. I'd rather they watch that, than the older shows on Nick and Disney.

They do watch commercials intently and sometimes repeat them back to me, "Mom, you need this because it's 27 devices in one and it's easy to clean." Sometimes they'll call me into the family room, just so I can see some magic product designed to make my life easier. That always leads to a conversation about how advertisers want people to spend their money on things they don't need!
