Florence Adele was born on April 17 at 4:23 pm. After laboring at home from 4:00 am to about 2:30 pm (contractions started around 10:00 am), we left for our birth center, about 40 (bumpy, twisty, back road) minutes away. Arrived at the birth center just after 3:00, fully dialated, and little Florence was born in the water a mere 90 minutes later.
We had a wonderful birth - exactly what we wanted. We used the Bradley Method and relaxing through the contractions helped a lot, although my labor went much faster than we thought it would. If anyone out there knows the Bradley Method, you'll know what I mean when I say that I went from the "putsy-putsy stage" to the "serious, do-not disturb stage" in about an hour. I actually started to feel pushing contractions as we were leaving our house! I thought first time births were supposed to be slow!
Florence Adele was born at 38 1/2 weeks, weighing 6 pounds, 10 ounces, at an amazing freestanding birth center in NH. We took her home about 4 hours after she was born and, after a rocky breastfeeding start, is thriving and charming us every minute. Photos: Florence and daddy:
