making pockets - advice

i have looked at the sticky with all the places to buy supplies, but i wanted to get some feedback as to where any of you ladies think is the best place. i am going to try my hand at making some pockets and need some pul/poly and maybe a little suede fabric (sim to my bgs) and maybe some fleece so i can try one of each - although i feel like the poo comes off my bg the best.

any hints and suggestions are welcome, fabric, patterns, snaps, (that thing that puts the snaps on) - etc.

thanks ladies!!

i am in canada, so i cant help much with where to get stuff.

but i use mostly recycled stuff except for the PUL part. my inners are all microfleece since that works really well for us. my diapers are all with velcro but i am begining to hate them since even with laundry tabs, they seems to form a diaper snake in the wash, so i am now switching to tie diapers. i dont hv a snap press but most moms hv the KAM snap press that you can purchase from Very Baby (i think) or Serena in china but i think she has a wait list for that. An arbor or drill press if you have one can be modified to be a snap press.

i make my pockets with front sham opening since i dont want to be touching the poop when i unstuff them..lol my DS's pockets has gusset since he is EBF and his poop is runny. gussets are great to keep the messes in but a pain to sew and you dont need it if your DC is on solids.

there are as many free patterns as they are purchased patterns. for me, i use some recycled fabric (old bedsheets are the best) to make diapers from 3 different free patterns, Wee Weka, Ottobre and Rita's Rump Pockets (RRP). My DD's best fit is on the Ottobre so her stash is made from that. My DS's best fit is from the Wee Weka so his stash is from that. I've made an RRP and love the pin part but my DH wasnt not keen on the pinning and when i turned them into velcro-ed diaper, even with shortening the wing, it was still a little bulky at the crotch.

good luck!

If you join Serena's yahoo group and wait a few days for your membership to be approved, you can order right away. I joined last week and my order has already been shipped. You just have to check if there are openings for April. It's worth a try if you want one.

A suggestion if you're really "poo-phobic"...you could make a pocket diaper with a sewn-in, or snap-in soaker, for extra absorbency (lay in is also fine but it can shift with a wiggly baby). Or you could forgo the pocket altogether and just make a sort of PUL outer/microfleece inner fitted with a multiple layer soaker (topped with whatever you like best, suedecloth or microfleece) sewn into the back. That way, you can just grab the outside, shake off the poop from the soaker and throw into your pail.

Also, the sewn-in or snap-in soaker means reduced drying time.

Definitely sign onto the diaper divas board...there are some great tutorials with pics there and some awesomely helpful fluff mamas.

how much does she charge for the press and the attachment that you need for the size 16 snaps? so far the cheapest i could find the press was $65 and i think you need to buy the attachements seperately (please correct me iif im wrong)

i was looking around and it looks like $10ish is normal for a yard of PUL, but on one site i read that for size lg you can fit 4 dipes on 2/3 yd and the rest is waste if you only order a singe yard.

i am having a hard time finding suede cloth, is the stuff that i can get at the local joanne's the same stuff do you all think?

i believe the suedecloth you want is also called "alova" suedecloth. they should be available at your local jo-ann or hancock. also you can check independent fabric/quilting store where you are from. sometimes i find the best deal and hard to find stuff at these stores than the bigger fabric store in canada aka fabricland. also you can check your local wal mart. i believe someone in the US (not sure where) picked up alova suedecloth for $1/yard. that is a very deal for any material per se.
