Pitocin and Pushing

I was induced/augmented with Pit with both previous labors.....silly me, I didn't know any better. When it came time to push, it was that uncontrollable, body takes over, CAN'T STOP from pushing feeling. I didn't have any pain medication or epidural. I'm having a homebirth this time, so no Pit....yay! My question is, was that my BODY or was that the Pitocin making me push with that much intensity? I'm just kind of wondering what to maybe expect this time around.

I am glad that you asked this question. My last birth was with pti and no epi. And i too had that uncontorlable urge to push and DS came out almost on his own. I couldnt not push...i couldnt hold it. I'm interested to see what other's say about this. My next birth is a homebirth too.

As far as my understanding, that pushing is your body's doing, not the pitocin.

The pitocin will cause contractions of the uterus, but pushing isn't the same as your uterus contracting, it's your bodies was of getting that baby on out and it often when the baby is moving out of the uterus anyways.

When you often hear of people telling women to only push during a contractions, thats because it's like an extra hand in pushing, not so much that a contraction is needed. Though, having been there, done that, for me my body was pushing and it didn't matter if there was a contraction or not. I thought that pushing with contractions was more for when you're not getting as much of that ejection reflex and are having to really work with your body versus just following it's lead. Thats just my two cents.

That makes sense! I was hoping it was me because it's happened both times and I pushed for about 5 minutes with each one. It was super intense, and I'm hoping for a little longer pushing time, but I really don't want to be pushing for hours!

I've never had pit and I experienced that intense "I have to push now!" feeling with my second birth. I think that's the way it's supposed to be. I didn't feel it at all with my first (the contractions also slowed down a lot) and ended up pushing for two hours.
