At what age should a child be able to wipe his/her own bum cleanly (after a poop) without an adult having to make sure they've done a good job? I can't believe this is my first poll and this is my topic!

I'm relieved to read this, because I don't remember from my first child- I really have no recollection of showing her, or requiring it, or anything!- and my almost-four-year-old certainly needs, and wants, someone to do it for him.

DS (7) is finally doing a really good job with this. It's been a struggle w/ him.

DD was 4.

I stopped wiping my oldest on his 4th bday, and I think he should have done it on his own sooner. My 2.5 yr. old still needs wiped by an adult but by 3, I'll start having him wipe then I'll check.

my five-year-old could do a better job! I voted 5-6.

MAN! I woke up to my three year old whom of which had come ALL the way upstairs to ME so that I could wipe her! That was foul...I just do not like waking up to poo:Puke well, i must add, this was an unusually messy poo.

Other than that, I ask her to call for me so that I can wipe her. My 6 year old is finally doing a good job...she has been difficult with the toilet hygiene.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

DS was 4.5 when he was able to take over completely.

ds is going to pre K in september so I hope to teach him over the summer...he will be 4 in July. I really hope he catches on quickly and does a good job.

For those of you who said your child (whatever age) is now successfully wiping, I'm just wondering if that is using regular TP or if it is using those other special wipes. my DD (turning 6 next week) has yet to take on this task at all.

Should and do are two different things IMO . My 3yo is capable and has been able to do a good job for a while but my nearly 6yo can't (even when he tries, he does not actually wipe much off)

I think it must depend on the child, I voted 6-7 as a guess. My 5 yo needs and wants help. sometimes he would rather do it himself. Frankly, I want him clean and don't mind doing it for him, neither does my dh. when he is ready and capable that will be the right time for him, I'm not worried about it.

I kind of pushed my DD into it b/c I could not do it anymore. She has been doing it on her own now for about 6 mos...so since she was 5.

We use family cloth.

Annabelle is 34 months and just started wiping well.

Both my dds started at about four, but my younger one just started doing a good job finally and she's five. My older one (seven) still occasionally misses some, but overall does a good job.

Still trying to figure this one out for myself! DD is still pretty clueless.

My 3 yr old dd wipes her own butt and comes to me so I can "inspect" her work. She does a pretty good job most of the time.

I feel that when they're being potty trained, they should also be taught to wipe themselves, I feel like they should be able to do it by themselves when they're able to go to the bathroom by themselves, like without adult assistance.. Neither of my 4-year-olds need help.

My 2.5 yr. old has been potty trained since 20 mos. but he still needs help both with wiping and getting his pants and undies up and down. With two kids that potty trained before 2, teaching wiping at the same time as pottying wasn't doable for us. For a child that doesn't potty train until 3, maybe.

My 4 year old (just turned 4) can do pretty good with the wipes, they are way easier for him than regular TP. (But I still supervise because he'll dump all the wipes or all the TP in the toilet and clog it up if he gets the chance. And he sometimes needs me to do a second wipe for him. But anyway, the flushable wipes are way easier for him to use.
