Is this common? I try and burp him but rarely burps. When he spits up, it's breast milk (I don't know if when he spits up its suppose to look like vomit or what ) Ow yeah he hiccups frequently

Any advice is helpful

ETA: I lay him on his back after he nurses...........

My boy gets hiccups all. the. time. I have been told by everyone it is common.

Thank goodness he has only spit up a couple times so I don't have to freak out about that. If you vigorously burp or put too much pressure on the stomach after a feeding I heard that makes them spit up.

We are having feeding issues. We are EBF and he will drink for a short time and fall asleep. I can't keep him awake no matter what. Then he wakes up and gets cranky. I don't think he is even emptying a boob. It is so frustrating.

Yeah, it's normal and perfectly ok.

Remember that the babys' stomach is only about as big as a marble for the first few weeks or something like that. I'd have to look it up again to be sure, but I was amazed at how really tiny their bellies are. No wonder they spit up, they keep overfilling their tanks!

Breastfed babies don't burp the way that FF babies do, since they get fewer air bubbles. The still do occasionally burp, but you don't have to force the issue. With DS if he had enough air to need to burp, he's be cranky after a feeding until it came up, usually with a fair amount of breastmilk too. No worries, your supply will be plentiful enough to make up for what doesn't stay down. it will look like breastmilk when it comes back up, sometimes slightly curdled, and often very spitty. This is normal too. It won't look like characteristic vomit really.

Hiccups and lots of sneezing are normal. The baby still has a little fluid in the smaller pockets of the lungs, and the hiccups and sneezes help move that fluid out. Some babies, including my own, cough up fluid and swallow it, and then spit it up, fire-extinguisher style, all at once when the belly is full. Don't panic if your baby pukes clear fluid every now and then, this is just the amniotic fluid coming up. The more, the better, cause every little bit is less that's in her lungs.

No problem about the back laying, just keep the baby close, along with plenty of dry cloths for wiping. Turn the baby to the side to help the spit up drain away from the mouth, or even face down in your arm. Just wipe him/her off as best as you can, she'll be fine.

yup. totally normal. gripe water can help a little with the hiccups, though, if it seems like they're bothering him.

Gotta second the gripe water - we happen to have the Baby Bliss brand, but any would probably do, it really does seem to stop our oft-hiccuping LO. Like pp said, no harm to them, but if it interferes with feeding or is just making them cranky, it seems to work well.

Oh, Ishereal! I wanted to say that I looked at your myspace page (I also looked when your LO was born, WOW! What a wonderful birthing goddess you are.) and I just love that pregnancy picture you have there. Where did that come from and is there somewhere I can buy that in poster form?

When my LO burps he sounds like an adult!!! we haven't even tried a bottle yet so he must be nursingAND getting air bubbles IDK.
If I don't at least try to burp him before laying him down he gets really fussy. or will wake up crying with a pained look on his face. Or he'll start coughing and spit up, or rather spew up, part of his previous meal (in varying states of digestion). I seriously worry that he could choke on what comes up sometimes.
oh, and hiccups? yes. tons here.
