Keeping the toliet clean

We abide by the "three-pee" rule, though if DH is home alone it's more like the 6 pee rule. No matter what, we end up with a little grime inside the toliet bowl when we do flush. Can I put something into the tank that'll clean the bowl everytime we flush?

Livin' on a septic...good question! :

I've had nice results with scrubbing with vinegar/baking soda/lemon juice during cleaning- scrub, let it soak and deoderize, then flush- but that's on cleaning day. I'd love to get some good info for each flush- our's can get kinda yucky QUICK!!!!!

subbing.

between utilizing the motto "if it's yellow, let it mellow. if it's brown, flush it down" and having a lot of iron in our well water, our toilet gets NASTY!

Any suggestions? I'd like to flush less often to save water but I can't handle the scum and don't want to brush it down every day which is the only thing I can think of to handle the issue. One thought I had in the back of my mind was drop a denture tablet in and flush once a day?

We are on a well and septic. We also "let it mellow" so our toilet can look pretty gross if we let it. The bathroom is hubby's job and what he uses is just vinegar. Dumps some in, let's it sit a bit and then scrubs it. If it's really gross because he left it a little longer he'll put some vinegar in at night and give it a quick scrub in the morning. It always comes out perfect!

We have hard water too and the vinegar takes care of those stains too.

Whew! Feels good knowing that we're not alone, doesn't it?!!

I'm going to try the vinegar thing. Usually I can get by using Seventh Generation toilet cleaner, but I must admit that sometimes it just gets too nasty and I have to break out the commercialized stuff

Me too. Our toilet is old and looks nasty no matter what I do to it. The ONLY thing that made it any better was the clorox tab that DH tried last year. Needless to say, I'll live with the nasty toilet. I have had to put on gloves and go at it with a pumice before and that helped alot.

I usually throw in vinegar or lemon juice and BS and let it foam and soak for the day. That helps some, too.

We live outside of Atlanta and are in a water crisis... we don't flush the yellow stuff either but with boys in the house we have the dirty toilet problem too. I bought these in Dec. and they are great!

I have been using these and I can see a real difference!

How long do they each last?

I justr found a magic solution I use my soapnuts and make liquid soap by boiling them. Then I combine the liquid with vinegar and TTO and it takes every last nasty out of my cleaning jobs with no chemicals, and little fuss. I have nasty hard water livin here in AZ and the toilet gets knarly. I just dilute my cleaner with water and spray the toilet down, give it a little brush and voila-no gunk.

According to the website...
Lasts 5 years or 50,000 flushes.

I have been using it since DEC and its going strong.

I put a bucket in the shower to catch all of the water or plug it and use it to do those extra flushes. I also scrub my toilet tank once a month with a ruff plastic sponge and Borax.

Anyone know what the "special mineral magnets" are?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a gnarly toliet. I do scrub with vinegar and baking soda, with the occasional few drops on EO. I didn't know if there was I could put in the tank (or whatever you call the back part) that would clean it each time I flush.

Why don't you also try pouring vinegar in the tank so that the new water going into the bowl deodorizes it. Seems to help us although I really want to get the 5,000 flush thing.
Also, (I haven't tried this but I should) isn't there a method of putting a milk jug in the tank so it doesn't waste so much water? I've read this before but can't remember exactly what to do.

Yeah, you just fill a milk jug with water and set it in the back of the tank. It displaces the water, so a gallon less will fill the tank. You can also use a brick. Just make sure it doesn't get in the way of the flushing and filling mechanisms. 2 half-gallon jugs might work better because they are narrower
PS- don't do this with a low-flow, it will never flush it all
