are seeds and seed oils ok?

so this is depressing. my spectrum organic olive oil (cost a fortune) I realized is made at a place that processes peanut oil. DS is allergic to peanuts, so obviously I need to not use it

what about sesame oil and sunflower oil? should I avoid those too? (in case they're made at a place that processes nuts, b/c don't seeds get processed along with nuts, generally). Plus, I recently learned that products actually do not have to label whether there may be x-cont. (I think it should be mandatory!!). and so then do people avoid all seeds/seed oils if allergic to nuts?

Help! I'm still new to this and still confused...

It really just depends on the manufacturer. This isn't oil, but sunflower seed butter that can be used in place of peanut butter is made in a dedicated peanut-free facility http://sunbutter.com/default.asp. You'll probably have to do a lot of label reading and emailing each company to verify the sources and manufacturing practices of the oils you want to use.

Trader Joe's has told us (in writing) that their calamata olive oil from Greece is made in a facility that only makes olive oil. We have not had any problems with this oil, and have used many bottles. I think there are many small companies that only make olive oil, so maybe email some companies. I think cross contamination is a real concern with nuts and seeds and oils.

thanks for the link. I do miss my PB. I think I"m going to have to order some - it looks good! and I will check out TJ's olive oil next time I'm there - thanks! I guess I'll have to start really emailing /contacting companies...

Sesame is also a pretty high allergen - you may want to avoid that one, since your little guy is allergic to peanuts. Mine has a sesame allergy, but not a peanut allergy!

oh my! how did you find out about sesame allergy? I have been trying to avoid sesame... some of these gluten free things I've been eating have sesame in them. I'm telling you - it's so hard to find things that have no nuts, seeds, wheat, dairy, soy or eggs! (or that aren't processed in a place that does!) arggh!

My guy had allergy testing done, and I was suspicious that he was sensitive to sesame so asked the allergist to test for that - he did and it was positive. I think we're actually really lucky - he has lots of allergies, but we're okay to have wheat, rice and eggs - that sure helps. But I agree - for me, our top pain in the butt items are dairy, soy and corn. He is allergic to almonds and sesame, but strangely peanuts are okay! We're avoiding them anyways until he's much older - just in case.

My dd is allergic to sesame, too, along with a few other seeds (sunflower, flax, coconut). To be safe, we keep her away from all other seed oils (grapeseed, pumpkin, etc.) and nuts, as well.
