So when he begins nursing I have a let down and I know it can be kind of intense for him, anyone ever had that happen?

Yup. All the time with my first two. They learn quick though.

oh, yeah, my let down has always been fierce. if it's choking him, you can always pull him off for a second and let the worst of it come out into a prefold or a rag and then latch him back on. they do get used to it pretty quickly, though, and when they get bigger it makes them quite happy. so cute to watch them gulp, gulp, gulp!

i overwhelmed my LO a lot, for months b/c i had such a strong supply/let down. i recommend this (take him off and let the milk squirt into prefold). I love that gulp!

I know he is eating well as at 2 weeks he has regained his birth weight, but i don't think i feel a let down. What does it feel like?

If it's a big problem try uphill nursing. There are some pictures and an explanation on this page http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html

I have always had powerful letdown and my poor LO's come up choking and sputtering if I don't take them off! I can feel my letdown so I do just that; take them off and spray off into a prefold or receiving blanket. As pp have mentioned as they get older their ability to tolerate it gets better and they also become more efficient at nursing/draining the breast.

Not in your ddc, but I couldn't help but respond. I have OALD (overactive letdown) and oversupply, which is troublesome because I go through letdown after letdown, all of which are explosive. If you seem to think you have both, pm me and I can share what helped us. If its just OALD, then your lo will get used to it, and uphill nursing or popping the lo off right before letdown and then relatching after can help too. If your baby doesn't seem bothered by it though, isn't gassy, and is having normal poops, you don't even have to change your method.

Good job, mama!

I don't think I can feel it.... besides just that feeling of "aaaah...." But I can sure hear it! It sounds like a spray nozzle in a little bottle, and then a GULP - Repeat...

For me, it kind of feels like a contraction in my breast, but I can also feel a sort of tingling in my nipples from the force of the milk squirting out.

I'm drowning mine too!
He coughs, sputters, gulps, pulls himself off and then spits most of it up.
I think I'm making it faster than he can consume it too and I get all engoged and uncomfortable!
Breast pump just came, I hope it helps!!!

I have super forceful letdown and nursing 'uphill' really helped. By about 4 months, DD got the hang of it and could gulp fast enough! good luck
