Can a 3yr old knit?

Thread Starter
Hello-
My almost 3 yr. old daughter has been begging me to knit. She watches me and really wants to do it too. I have given her yarn to play with and wrap around her fingers but she's not satisfied. Any suggestions for a project for her? Thanks so much all...

My 4 year old loves to finger knit.. She makes long chains that we then turn into crowns necklaces and other things..

I also suggest finger knitting.
I'm going to be teaching my youngest son's kindergarten class how to do it next month.

finger knitting and finger crotching is how i start all my kids. then a loom or knitting spool thing. then needles. when we start with the needles they are holding the needles and my hands are over theirs. when you turn them loose on a project start with something you can finish in an hour. This is a finishable size for them (even if it takes them three weeks.)

I don't know, but I want to get a spool and let my 2.5 year old try it. He pulled my dpn's out of a longie leg and sat there pulling one stitch at a time to try ot figure out how it worked. He keeps talking about "knit needles" he really wants to figure it out.

I started crocheting at a young 4. And one of my knitting mentors has been knitting since she was 4. Depends on the child.

Didn't learn how to spool knit until recently.

this is awesome! i've never seen it before. what do you do with the finished lengths, though? i mean, it seems like they're only ever as wide as your hand and as long as you want them, right?

Sounds like me at a young age. I was always trying to figure out how things worked. I just loved watching Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood cus they would videotape how things were made at the factory. Now they have that show "how it's made" on the discovery channel. Love it. I don't doubt he could learn, but probably better be with close supervision and less sharp needles. If my kids have any interest... i'll just teach them to crochet.

Thanks for that link. The pictures and directions are very clear compared to some I have seen. Can't wait to help DD try some finger knitting.
