a chemical-free sunscreen that is not expensive?

We live in Fl and are outside SO much (taking care of gardens, dd loves to play on her swing set, mowing, going to the compost etc..) and we all have hats we can wear to help but it is just WAY too hot to cover-up with long sleeves and long pants even with drinking plently cool water. we have no trees on our land for shade. and we are working on a plunge pool to cool off in and for dd to swim. for now we just have a large kiddie pool...

but dd's skin is sensitive and I hate putting sunscreen filled with chemicals on her, plus it cannot be good for dh or I either.. I bought some neutrogena(sp?) that said sensitive skin, but I looked at the ingredients and it has some chemicals in it. Dd has a rash that comes and goes(depending on what comes in contact with her skin-like certain laundry detergent) and I am trying to get rid of it completly.

So, I am wondering if there is some other type of sun protection besides a chemical free sunscreen that cost SO much?

I've heard coconut oil provides some protection? but not sure about that? we all use coconut oil on our skin everyday.

obviously if there is no other option I will buy the expensive sunscreen, but wanted to see if anyone knew of any other options first

This is what I use:
http://uncommonscents.com/Badger-Sun...-p/bd46031.htm

Not too terribly expensive compared to most other natural sunscreens, and it works great!

I also saw this the other day:
http://uncommonscents.com/Naked-Bee-...een-p/nbsu.htm

The ingredients aren't listed, but it says this:
"Paraben-free and paba-free. No propylene glycol or mineral oil. No animal testing."
And the main page for their products says this:
"70% Certified Organic personal care products made from Aloe Vera, Sunflower and Palm Oils, Honey, Beeswax and infused with botanical extracts all known for moisturizing, nourishing, restoring, renewing, invigorating. All without the harsh chemicals and preservatives. These days it's very important to be natural - so they are. But that's not the only reason folks love The Naked Bee™... it simply feels and smells terrific!
All Naked Bee products are paraben-free. No propylene glycol or mineral oil. No drying alcohol. No lauryl or laureth sulfate. No EDTA. Absolutely NO animal testing… ever."

And it has a really good price too.

I've used the Naked Bee product the PP mentioned. I like it. They sell it in the gift shop of our Zoo. That is the only place around here I have seen it. I apprecitate the link.

ETA: They used to sell Badger products at CrackerBarrel restaurants. I wonder if they have the sunscreen there? It's worth checking for.

nak

check out this from skin deep. lists unharmful yet effective options.

also, please read this article about why its important.

Quote:
Fully 13% of high SPF sunscreens (SPF of at least 30) protect only from sunburn (UVB radiation), and do not contain ingredients known to protect from UVA radiation, the sun rays linked to skin damage and aging, immune system problems, and potentially skin cancer. FDA does not require that sunscreens guard against UVA radiation.

Along the same lines, does anyone know why more natural sunscreens only seem to go up to SPF 30 rather than SPF 50 that the chemical-laden ones go up to?

And what about bug repellants? Any ideas there?
