Anybody had bladder issues after vag birth?

My friend just had a VBAC and had to push for 3 hours which resulted in some bladder issues. Her bladder isn't emptying all the way so she is going home with an indwelling catheter. Right after the birth she could not urinate at all and they put the catheter in several hours after birth. She was wondering if there was anything natural that could be done to help this issue and if anyone here had experience with this issue.

TIA

Kegel exercises. 1000 a day. No, I am not kidding.

It will be a while before she can connect with them again, but urinating and stopping in midstream, and then starting again is a beginning.

I am glad she had a vaginal birth.

I had the same thing after my birth. I tore a lot and was very sore, and was pretty much involuntarily holding in my pee because it just burned to pee.

My catheter had been removed already and I was given a few acupuncture treatments to get my bladder going. It worked out, and also pouring a pitcher of warm water "down there" as I peed helped to relieve the pain and fear of pain I had.

Lean forward as far as possible while sitting on the toilet to get the bladder to empty all the way. Sometimes I'm practically bent in half before I'm done. (doesn't work so well these days, of course). Now while pg, I have to put my hand under my belly and lift up on it a bit, and that seems to help some.

There is a ton of info to be found on the pelvic organ prolapse thread. You could send her there.

Great advice. I had to do this after developing kidney pebbles because I wasn't emtying my bladder all the way durring pregnancy, Even pp I had to lift up on my belly and bend over to empty all the way.

sometimes you can't go natural...

sometimes there's no natural way out. i 've been dealing with problems with my bladder since i was in high school (i'm nearly 30 now.) i hope she's been set up with a urologist, because not seeing a doc can lead to years and years of trouble. trust me, i know. however, i hope this can be fixed for her without meds. for me, there's no other way. my bladder doesn't empty b/c there is something wrong with the valve between my bladder and urethra. i get UTIs and bladder infections over and over and over, which has only worsened since having my son. good luck to your friend!! i do not want to see others suffer as i have.

(i've done so many kegels that i can pop a speculum right back out during PAPs.)

I had it with both of my boys. I pushed with my first for 2.5 hours- but oddly enough the bladder problem didn't show up until over 48 hours later-just for a day it decided to stop working, then it would let go whenever it felt like : With my second I couldn't pee for like 16 hours, then when I finally could it just went everywhere, I didn't even feel like I needed to go. I just had DH go get me some Depends from the drugstore and I wore them for a few days until my bladder went back to normal.

I really don't think a catheter is necessary. Sure its annoying to be incontinent but catheters are just way too much of an infection risk. She should be fine in a day or two.
