Funny - the story of my birth as told by my parents

My mom and dad started talking about the day I was born. (I'm their first born).

My mom didn't even realize she was in labor until contractions were right on top of each other. She was really calm and just waddled into the ER, because she was calm my normally super worried father was also pretty calm.

In the next room a woman was screaming at her husband, cursing and ordering him to do something one second and then telling him to stop a second later. Very sitcom-ish. (IE: You Dirty SOB! You did this to me! Get out! Where do you think you're going?! etc)

My mom's just laying there thinking, "People do this everyday, it's natural. What is that woman screaming about?" (it actually never occurred to her that the woman was also in labor!)

Well my mom's laboring away, but no one believes her because she isn't really freaking out. In fact the nurse sat in the room with them eating a baloney sandwich (both parents SWEAR by this... not sure if I buy that part )
and then she's filing her nails, when my father politely informs her that he can see my head (including eyebrows!).

The nurse saunters over all put-out like, sees the top of my little head and begins to freak out. "Don't push! Don't push!" then she runs from the room to find the OB.

I was born 3 pushes later. My mother never made a peep according to my dad.

I was pretty shocked with my mom's behavior..... you should see this woman when she gets a splinter! I trust my dad though, he wouldn't lie about that....even if the sandwich seems unlikely.

Man I hope this baby is as easy on me as I was on her!

That is classic.

Either my birth or my middle sister's birth (I forget which) involves my dad and the OB watching the Miss America Pageant and my mother yelling at them for it.

I've had two very easy births. It's totally possible to be calm and quiet and simply have a baby! I credit it to two things - well positioned babies and hypnobirthing! If you get your head out of the way, I believe your body knows what to do.

It's reassuring when your mother had a straightforward experience, isn't it?

This is my first, & I like thinking about my mum's story of my birth, because I'm an exact physical replica of her - she always says "it didn't hurt exactly but it's bloody hard work!", & my dad got so excited that when the midwife asked for a towel he said "what's towel?"

Also, in the days before mobile phones, my dad nearly missed it because he was in a meeting & my mum couldn't get hold of him. Can't imagine that happening these days - specially since I arrived on my due date!

I think having mother who views her own births as natural, somewhat simple experiences can do a lot to help with fears. My mother had three natural deliveries, and while she always said that they were really intense towards the end, she often comments that it wasn't too difficult, and were her life's greatest accomplishments. It did a lot to build my own confidence in my body's ability to birth.
