citric acid - info?

I've been trying to get info on this & am not coming up w/ anything. And, since the search function here is down, I feel lost.

Anyone know what citric acid is? I think my ds is reacting to it. Is it made/grown/whatever w/ corn?

Any info, links, etc. would be most appreciated.

While I don't think it is exclusively a corn derived ingredient (i.e. citric acid can be made from other things I think), most of the time you see citric acid in food it IS a corn based ingredient.

my friend's dh is currently undergoing allergy testing. one of the things he's allergic to is corn and they told him not to consume citric acid (or maltodextrin or ascorbic acid)

I don't have a link/reference, but when I was researching info for my corn allergy I read somewhere the statistic that approx. 90% of the citric acid used in the U.S. is derived from corn, most of it being supplied by the Archer Daniels Midland company.

Citric acid can also be derived from other sources, such as citrus fruit.

Citric acid is used in most canned goods; also, many fresh fruits and veggies and also fresh meats are sprayed/rinsed with citric acid as a preservative measure.

Oh, thanks ladies. That's what I thought, that it was somehow corn-contaminated, but know I know.

I was making what I thought would be a corn-free dinner last night then found citric acid on the container of canned chilies. I rinsed them very well & Ds had a relatively good night sleep, so that seemed to have helped.
