I'm following directions I found online for a homemade drum, and for covering the drum, there is no indication on what material to use and where to buy it. I want something nice and durable, yet inexpensive. help?

Are you talking about the head of the drum or a drum cover/carrier?
I only know that my friend the drum maker makes his drum heads out of goat skin. HTH.

ITA.
You can buy goat skin heads for pretty cheap.
Its a pretty simple process to get it ready for the drum.
