Ian William Davis was born on Wednesday morning at 7:19. He's a little peanut weighing 6lbs 12oz (average for Colorado) and measuring 19.75" long. He is such a sweetie and we are so in love!!!
I was scheduled to be induced Wednesday morning at 6:30am, as my doctor wouldn't let me go any longer at 41.5 weeks and I had made no progress at all. On Tuesday, I was feeling so discouraged about being induced and spent much of the day just crying, praying, and trying to release my disappointment. At about 9:45pm, I decided to take a bath and listen to my birth music just to relax for the next day. I talked to our baby for a little bit while in the bath and then flipped over and just laid my head on the side of the tub and floated on my stomach for a while. That's when the contractions started!
I could tell that they were different than the braxtons that I'd been having. I stayed in the tub for a little while to see if they'd continue before calling my husband up. I was so excited that I went into labor on my own!!! After that, everything seemed to go so fast. I got out of the tub and labored either standing, squatting, leaning, or sitting on the toilet (which was great!) for all of my contractions. It hurt way too much to lay down. I kept focusing on my cervix opening and staying relaxed. It was amazing and painful all at once.
I never formed a real contraction pattern, and I was waiting for my contractions to be at 4 minutes apart, 1 minute long, for an hour before going to the hospital. I knew that I'd rather labor at home for as long as I could. I thought that our baby may be posterior as he was facing left instead of right, so it didn't suprise me when my contractions came one on top of the other (I thought that I was having double peaking contractions), or when they lasted for up to two minutes. Honestly, I couldn't believe that I was anything except for in early labor and, when I checked, my cervix didn't feel very dialated at all.
However, at about 4:30am my body started to involuntarily push with each contraction and I had the shakes. I thought that there was something wrong with the baby and my husband and I left for the hospital right away. We raced there so fast, but I was still sure that I was only around 3cm. I couldn't imagine dealing with the intense pain much longer and thought that I would have to ask for an epidural when I got to the hospital. I couldn't believe that anyone was able to get through labor without one at this point!
When we got to the hospital, I was rushed back to a free room and was checked. I was at 8cm!!! I was so relieved!!!! My labor nurse was so kind, she took off the fetal monitors and let me labor standing with my husband supporting me until I was at 10cm. I pushed for a couple contractions while laying on my side, but that just didn't feel right for me, so she brought in a squat bar and I pushed squatting until the baby crowned a couple contractions later.
The doctor wasn't there yet so she had me lay back down on my side and push, hoping that the doctor would get there in time. She brought in a mirror so I could see everything, which was awesome! The sensation of my baby's head and body coming out was incredible (and super painful!), and I'm so glad that I was able to experience it.
He was taken over to the warmer right away, as they worried that he had swallowed meconium. He was doing great, however, and his apgar scores were 9 and 9. When they brought him back to me, I saw that he had a head full of black wavy hair! He's so beautiful!!! He took to nursing right away, and I was so grateful for my labor and delivery nurse who spent so much time with me that morning getting his latch right. He's eatting like a champ! My husband did so great while I was in labor and took to being a dad so naturally. I'm so thankful for the way everything worked out.
Wow! I was just going to type out the short version!
I'll have to post some pics later for you all to see!
