I heard years ago that the smell of a ferret will scare the mice and rats away. Know anyone with a ferret willing to turn it loose in your house for awhile?

Considering that you've got cats, and the rodents are coming in anyway, I doubt the smell of them is any sort of deterrent.

Thank you both for these suggestions. I have dog food in the pantry and they've taken to helping themselves to some of it. My problem with the dog food is I haven't found a container that's just the right size for it. Like, I don't want the big steel garbage containers cause that's entirely too big. Any suggestions for a container that's just the right size for a 20lb bag of dog food? (Walmart sells dog food containers, but they're plastic.) Maybe a feed store...hmmm....

I'll definitely be buying some mint tea to keep them out and should definitely buy mint plants for around the house.

It seems to me that I've seen smaller versions of the metal garbage cans, though darned if I can remember when or where now.

Maybe at a place like Home Depot or Lowe's or similar?

I'll take a look next time I'm in there. I did find some metal flip lid house cans yesterday, but that's $35. So, I'm guessing it's out there and I'll find it. Thank you for the suggestion.
