"Mother-In" supports bfing in public and at work

A recent controversy resulted in a “Mother-In” in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada yesterday April 28.

Although primarily in support of the right of babies to be near mother (regardless of how they are fed) (and also attended by non-breastfeeding moms), the rally did support breastfeeding in public and in the workplace.

See this news story for explanation:

The original blog that sparked the controversy is here:

This blog was discussed on Talk Radio here in Saskatoon on Wednesday last week, and again on Saturday when the blogger was a guest on a different radio show on the same station.

Amber Jones, the politician in question, was invited to post her own guest blog on the radio website:

Amber will also be a guest on the Saturday radio show this week.

(Janice here – I am so proud to be part of a community of women who is so educated and media-saavy and such great advocates that they could organize this event in just a few days, and bring more publicity to these issues. By doing so, they are providing support to countless other women who face these issues and hopefully will become empowered to “do what they need to do” in regard to combining breastfeeding and mothering, with public life – whether it be work, volunteering or recreation outside the home.)

Thanks very much for posting! Very very interesting. I wonder if she'll go federal at some point. Amber Jones is definitely on my radar.

So let me get this straight.

Male politicians at every level in many societies routinely appear at public events with their wives and/or children and are never castigated for failing to separate their private and public lives.

A female politician at the provincial level appears at a brief press conference with her husband and nursling, and she is dragged over the coals for "exploiting" her infant as "a political prop."

Hmmmm.... how's that for a double standard?

As I have said/written before, breastfeeding in public often isn't really about breastfeeding; it's about daring to be simultaneously female AND in the public sphere (i.e. fully a person) instead of safely ensconced behind closed doors where your femaleness needn't trouble anyone.
