Shower Hostess Gifts?

My two friends are throwing me a baby shower this saturday. Am I supposed to buy them each a gift? I have no idea what the "rule" is on this.

Thanks!

I didnt get her a gift, but i took her out for a really nice meal afterward. She loves her steak though, and really wanted a last "girls night out" before the baby comes. It was fun.

I don't think it's expected at all, but I'm sure it's appreciated. Perhaps some flowers (do you have a garden?) and a nice thank you ... that's all that's needed IMO.

I had never heard of this until a friend that I threw a shower for gave us a gift certificate to a restaurant in the thank you note that she sent. I certainly don't think it's necessary. I mean it was nice, but for some reason it actually felt a little awkward to me because I felt like it indicated that she had to repay me in some way. I know she was just saying 'thanks,' so maybe I'm just weird to feel this Of course a nice thank you note is always appropriate and I agree with merry-may...if you want to do something else maybe flowers?

I thought it was pretty customary to do this? My bf threw our shower, and I got her a necklace. It was a really nice moment when we sat down after and I gave it to her. I was able to really tell her how appreciative I am of her in my life and how much her friendship has meant to me all these years. I think it meant alot to her.

DP's brother and sister threw our "family shower," and we got them each a picture frame with a little sticky note that said "Baby goes here!" They seemed to really like them as well.

I don't think gifts are necessary though, and I think the same thoughts and appreciation can be shown without having to actually buy something. Just my 2 cents.

I haven't heard of it either, I don't think it's necessary but it is a nice thought. I would think that flowers or something tailored to her likes would be nice.

Hope you have fun at your shower!

I had my first shower with this, my second child, and I read alot about "hostess gifts" so I figured it was one of those etiquette things. She had to spend money to provide all the things related to my shower...so I figure a small token of appreciation was appropriate. I got her a multi function cake dish/punch bowl/serving platter...bought it in Ross for under $20 and she loved it. I think Ross is a good spot for items of such.

Thanks everyone! I was thinking of getting them each a $20 gift certificate to a spa we all like. I know that it's not much (for a spa) but I don't have cash busting out of my pockets right now... oh how I wish!

That's exactly how I felt...geez I am broke and need baby stuff...lol...that's why I did the gift from Ross...that way she had a gift she could use and always remember and would not have to put additional cash on it to use it...and it was LESS than $20...$14.99 to be exact! And there were lots of other home items for even less than that!

I am going to go to their website and check it out! Sounds like they have a lot of practical gifts. Thanks for the suggestion!

No problem...their website is not shoppable though..it's one of those you gotta go to the store kinda places since each one has different items...so take a quick look and see if you can find one in your area...if not, TJ Max and Marshall's are comparable...
