How can an OB just LIE like this?! - Page 3

I am in shock!!!!!

My mother-in-law is a tiny Korean woman and my husband was almost 8lbs. She had a normal vaginal birth. I know another woman who is 4 ft something and she had her babies at home with nooooo problems. Both of my friend's pregnancies were induced because of the questionable big baby. Both were a little over 7lbs. OB's think they have learned everything. A load of crap.

An OB once told a woman who had a severe tear to her rectum causing her to have bowel movements out of her vagina and she had two reconstructive surguries that her next baby would have to be a c-section!?! My midwife "rescued" her so to speak and told her that she could have a normal vaginal birth at home so my midwife took extra care with her during the pushing and crowning and the woman delivered with no tears! Most midwives, especially homebirth midwives believe in a woman's ability to birth their baby.

The problem with most is the birthing position. If OB's delivered babies in other birth positions besides laying on their backs their pelvises would open wider! Then they would know that most women can deliver their babies!!! They are not learning the right stuff in school anymore.

Wow.....I wonder if the OB is just wanting that extra cash that
comes along with a c section?

I don't think it is so much the money they make anymore, but is now more about time. A quick and planned 30 minutes c/s is so much easier and preferred over an unpredictable undetermined lengthed labor.

I am going to requote my earlier post.

I don't think OBs get that much more. Even in Chicago the increase for c-sections for the OB is only several hundred dollars, it is the hospital that charges the much heftier bill for a section -- it tends to increase (at least in Chicago) by about $10k+ but that is on the hospital side. The difference for the OBs is in time spent, and of course if it is scheduled -- then there is a difference in "convenience".

For example, my OB (who I am not birthing with) and who charges en par with others in Chicago and is on staff at Northwestern charges $5k for a vaginal and $5,200 for a c-section. Price includes prenatals but not testing. However, 20 minutes for $5,200 is much different than a likely longer labor for $5k.

Of course in addition to time, I think that alot of OBs have truly bought into this idea so that they no longer trust birth and women's bodies. Now, I don't personally know this OB so I have no idea what his/her motivation is (belief about birth, time, convenience, etc.)

Well, I had my baby (at 42 weeks) and she was 7.5 lbs -- had her vaginally. Baby #2 I had at home -- he was 42 weeks as well and 9.5 lbs. I wanted to call up the nurse who told me with my first pregnancy that I shouldn't birth a baby bigger than 6 lbs. Ha!
I've heard some midwives use a method to tell women what size baby they will be able to deliver. Example if I wear size 8 shoe then they would tell me I can deliver a 9 or 10lb baby with no problem. I know it might not be true for everyone but at least midwives give some kind of confidence to women. Many times confidence in yourself and body makes all the difference.

I do not think there's anything to the shoe size thing. There isn't really a correlation between shoe size and pelvis size, and pelvis size doesn't determine the pelvis's ability to open during birth. I know someone with size 5 feet who birthed 5 children, fairly close together, all 7-8lb range; her first when she was just 14. Of course, she always blamed her shoe size on her enormous breasts and that things don't grow that well in the shade.

OTOH, I have 9W's here, so I'll take what I can get!

I like the shoe size comparison, that means I can deliver near a 12 lb baby!

But really, my mom is only a shoe size 5.5 and delivered my brother at 10.5 lbs.
