Hair Gel Alternative

Ok, we're getting pretty natural and home-made around here. We no-poo, and make our own toothpaste alternative, etc. Ds has gained an interest in styling his hair lately but I'm not hot on picking up standard hair gel for him.

Mostly he's just slicking it back, but water doesn't do the trick because it gets puffy when it dries. lol He also likes to experiment with other styles, though.

The thought crossed my mind to tell him to use olive oil or something for slicking it, but that would just make it gross, right? I don't really know much about hair styling to start with, so trying to translate it to something chemical free is like trying to translate one language I don't speak into another language I don't speak, you know?

Any help/advice/thoughts are welcome.

Flax seed gel!

You put one or two tablespoons of flax seeds in a cup of water. Bring to a boil. Stir and boil for 5 to 15 minutes (depending on the viscosity you desire). Strain immediately.

Some folks add GSE or TTO to inhibit nasties. It must be kept in the fridge. I keep mine in a screw-top squeeze bottle. It seems to keep longer that way (21 days). In an open top cup that you dip into, it only keeps about 7 days.

coconut oil

In India they use the coconut oil in hair with very good results. My husband has very curly hair and the coconut oil makes it manageable.

I have nothing useful to add to this thread. But...

Did anyone else think of "There's Something About Mary" when they read the title to this thread?

I use clear aloe gel. It's gotten harder to find the past year or so, but I'm quite pleased with it.

when I had a mohawk I used egg whites, so if he wants it spikey that would work.

you guys rock. I knew you'd have all kinds of great suggestions. =D I'll talk to him and see what he prefers, and we'll experiment some. Wonderful ideas. Thanks.

I second the aloe vera. I use it and love it. Just use a small amount.
