water birth

I have a new baby and attempted a water birth. Just prior to entering birth tub, my water broke. After 10 or so minutes in the tub, my midwife made me get out due to meconium in the water. I still had a great birth but wonder about why I had to get out due to meconium in the water.

First, you should ask your midwife.

Second, there is evidence that babies that are stressed may make gasping motions as they're born and could inhale water into their lungs. Meconium is a sign that the baby is in distress, therefore it's reasonable to suggest delivering in air when that occurs.

I'd be upset that your midwife (medwife?) MADE you do something without even telling you why. :

My midwife called me tonight, so I asked her. First I must say that she is a CNM, and my birth was in a (progressive) hospital. My midwife said that she would have been fine with me staying in the tub. She said the meconium was minimal, and she was not concerned. Unfortunately we had a nurse who made a big deal out of it and is a stickler for hospital rules.

I said that my midwife "made" me get out because at that point I was already pushing and very much unable to have a conversation about it. In the end, I did have a great birth with a midwife I adore. I hope to have a waterbirth next time, but maybe that means I need to do it at home.

I'm so glad you were at least able to labor in the tub...it makes a huge difference so you didn't miss out on everything.
