I love the Kindle!

Someone had a thread awhile back asking if anyone had an Amazon Kindle ( which is a type of e-reader device). Since the search function is down I can't find the thread. Anyway, I finally got one and I love the thing! It's so easy to use, very intuitive and light. I love reading on the thing!

Anyone else have one?

I've been wanting one, but they seem a bit expensive, especially without being to try one first. How much was it again? Like $300 or something? And then books are around nine bucks.

I really look forward to trying it some day.

The books do average about 10 dollars but anything in the public domain runs from 1-3 dollars. Most of the stuff I bought so far was in the 3 dollar range. But I'm not a big fan of best seller fiction. Although I think that 10 dollars for best sellers is great given that they sell for much more even at discount usually. Plus I like the fact that there is no shipping, driving, printing, packaging ect associated with the books.

The thing I love the most if the lightness of it. I can read the Mahabharata in a 10 oz package Heck it holds hundreds of books in a 10 oz package.

Does it make your eyes tired like a screen if you read for too long?

I haven't had that problem. They discuss it in the little video on the Amazon site how it is designed to replicate paper and ink.

This would be my concern. Plus, I read mostly non-fiction and anthropological texts that probably wouldn't be available, anyway. Oh well.

My husband bought me one for mother's day, but I accidentally opened the package when it came so I started using it last week .

I'm SO in love with it. I was worried that it would be clunky or hard to get used to, but I felt like I'd mastered it within a few minutes of turning it on.

My favorite feature is the "try a sample" option with every book. It's like being in a bookstore, browsing the aisles. I also like the built in Wikipedia. I never thought I'd use it, but it's actually very handy.

The try a sample is great and you get generous amount of text with it IME.

I read mostly non fiction too btw and of course there is only so much available so far for the kindle but it's ok with me I don't expect it to replace all my books.

I can't wait to have something like this someday.... my shelves are bursting, so clearly I need one!

I was just about to make a post about this very same product! Amazon has some instock and its taking all of my willpower to hold off.

My bookshelves are packed to the breaking point, literally. But I just love being able to curl up with a good book. I'm so wish-washy on spending such a large amount of money.

Yeah I held off for months because I wasn't sure if I'd like it and I wasn't sure I wanted to invest the money in it but Amazon does have a great return policy. Not that I'd ever return mine. I love it too much.

I'd love to have one, but I'll wait until they come down in price. Oh, and until you can check out library books on it for free.

So another week and more observations. What I love is how the Kindle is opening me up to read things that I wouldn't have necessarily read because I am using the preview feature a lot and given the big price break and instant gratification I'm more likely to read stuff I'd normally think was interesting but wouldn't get.

Oooh, these are the reasons I want one. Like you said, I'd still read plenty of books. I read lots of unusual stuff. But I bet about half of what I read I could get on the Kindle. There'll probably be lots more in the future since it's proving to be such a popular device. They already have several of the magazines I read available.

Coupla questions -- does it have an adjustable backlight? My DP would be a happy happy man if I didn't have to turn on a light to read at night!

How's the battery life? I think I'd want to get a little solar adapter since I spend quite a bit of time reading outdoors in the summer while the kids swim or bike. It doesn't seem like a device that would have a huge energy drain since it has a gray scale screen, right?

My husband says he would have bought one, but he already had a Sony e-reader, first generation which he got fairly cheaply ($50). He really likes it, but I think what he likes about it is the concept of it. He says Sony charges full price hardback price for the books you download through them, and if you don't back them up and lose them, you have to repurchase them. Plus the interface for actually downloading on it is horrible. Sony isn't known for their great software, I guess. He says the Kindle has some good things, like the EVDO connection to Amazon.

He wishes he could find a book reader that would allow him to read PDFs more easily. How does the Kindle handle them, do you know?

I'm a really fast reader......I'm always flipping through pages. Would the Kindle slow me down?

Here is the page that discusses using docs with the Kindle. I have some I'm considering having converted and sent over but I haven't done it yet. It looks super easy though.

oops forgot to link it

The pages load very quickly ( I'm a fast reader also ) and you can search inside any book easily if you want to find something specific. Also you can make notes and highlights to certain passages you want to have easy access too.
