Thanks!!
I just downloaded Sherlock Holmes, some Jane Austen and the Scarlet Pimpernel from Amazon. You can search tags on amazon so search free, free kindle, or freebie & you'll start to get an idea of what's available.

And congrats on getting the kindle cheap!

I don't know if I am allowed to link there because they are a message board, but if you go to the Mobile Read forum and into the kindle section there is a sticky at the top of lots of free and low cost books. It is kept up to date, so I like it better than the kindle forums list because you can just go to the first post and see the whole list updated every day.

I had a thought the other day and was wondering what all of you think about it...

For years, I have used the library for all the books I want to read but don't necessarily need to keep - mostly fiction books, biographies, etc. If I don't get them from the library, I find that I end up swapping around with friends so either way, I am not buying most of the books I read that are not related to my profession.

With the Kindle, I LOVE the idea of being able to carry multiple books around, etc. The thing is, it really bugs me that I have to pay for every book and I can't share books with friends. I don't necessarily want to pay $10 for each new release book I want to read. I wouldn't mind paying a few dollars to "rent" a book (sort of e-library) or buy some and share with friends like the swap I did with actual books. Because of this, I have not gotten in to the Kindle as much as I thought I would.

Is anyone else bothered by this? Is there a way to share books among Kindle users? Is there a way to "rent" or "borrow" books that can be read on the Kindle?

Thanks!

I think there is a way to share your books with up to 5 (?) kindles on your amazon account. But I'm not sure how that works, and it sounds like they would have to be authorized to use your entire account, if that makes sense. I'm sure it's set up for family members to share books, if they each had a kindle.

Other than that, I don't know how you would pass on the e-books to someone else.

Anyone else have a clever work-around?

There are illegal ways with Kindle but that's it (ie, I download from a nonamazon site onto my computer, put it on a disk, and let someone else DL to their kindle as well). Obviously not advisable and not legal unless the content is open to all-- such as free books with no rights held by anyone, kwim?

On the other hand, Sony's readers let you download from libraries (the download then expires after 30 days or whatever). Hopefully Kindle will counter Sony and do the same or risk losing a lot of business.

But there are a lot of free ebooks out there via guttenburg (sp?), the thread on mobile read, etc.
