I love the Kindle! - Page 3

It's going to be thinner, move some keys around (like you said), supposedly it has a better screen, is going to be cheaper (249-299 zone), and have improved color on the screen and make the response time faster plus revamping the interface to make it more intuitive (examples were something like displaying the user activities in a more logical way). Since I don't have one, I can't really say if these things would be good or not but it seems like there are enough differences to make me stop and think or whether I should indulge at Christmas time or wait.

I have one and love it. One thing that is great about it (among many) is being able to read while side lying nursing without having to reach over to turn pages, which for my DD would be very distracting when trying to get her to fall asleep. Plus she's in 'got to grab EVERYthing' mode right now at 6 months and so the more inconspicuous something is, the better. It's expensive, but otherwise IMO it would be a great baby shower gift because of the ease of reading on it while juggling a baby. Plus there isn't much cooler than reading about a book at 11:30 at night and being able to instantly get a free sample and then order the whole thing right away if you want it and have it in 30 seconds

I wouldn't wait for the new version. I haven't had any problems with any 'bugs' with mine. The only thing, IMO, that would improve it is if they mounted some sort of discrete light (using a book light lights the room up more than I like) but I doubt they're going to add that on the next version anyway.

Oprah says the Kindle is her new favorite gadget on the show today 10/24.

eta: She has a code on her website that you can use to get $50 off the kindle. The code is OPRAHWINFREY
Go to amazon and type it into the promotional code.

I'm gonna talk Dh into buying me one.

eta: he said yes! So mine will be here on Monday (thank goodness for amazon prime!).

I'm just irritated that there is still no service in Alaska. :

DH wants to get me one for my birthday, but now I am wondering if I should wait til Kindle 2 comes out - tho i really dislike that they took the SD card slot off.

I guess I have til Nov 1 to decide

I ADORE my Kindle. In fact, my Kindle is a huge part of my life.

My husband got me one on Valentine's Day and even though I thought I would hate not having paper books, I truly love it.

I was glad to hear that Oprah listed it as one of her fave things!

I have a question.

Doesn't this work kind of like a cell phone? Seems like i remember hearing that you download the books wirelessly. Just wondered because I would love to get one but I get really bad headaches around cell phones and wondered if this would do the same thing to me.

It does work a lot like a cell phone, however you can turn off the wireless service while you're reading. Download time is just a few seconds per book.

I have been coveting one, but think I will hold out for the 2.0!

Thank you for letting me know. I might be able to use it. Or I might be able to let someone else download it for me.

I am updating my post above. DH got me one for my birthday (and gave it to me early ) and I LOVE it! Just LOVE it. We decided to go with the 1.0 and not wait for the 2.0 simply because of the SD card slot. If they are taking it off of the next version, I don't want that version

I'm dying for one of these things! Tell me about the SD card thing please. What is it? Why is it important and why would they do away with it?
We can't afford one right now anyway but I still was thinking it might be better to wait for them to come out with a newer version, since the first version of something isn't usually the best. I need the thing to get cheaper also.

An SD card is a memory card, so it allows you to add more storage space. I have a 2 gig one in my kindle. I'm sure I'd never fill that up though, the books don't take up that much space.

The wireless service is nice, but being in an area without service wouldn't stop me from getting a kindle. It's easy to shop at the amazon store and then transfer your purchase over usb. I hook mine up pretty reguarly anyway since I DL a decent amount of free books or create my own stuff from docs ect.

Ooh, I didn't know that you could run it through the computer. I thought you had to use the service. Resuming drooling now.

yeah it comes with a usb to mini usb cable. It's really easy to transfer stuff and amazon keeps tracks of all your digital purchases in your account management section of their website. That way you can either resend wirelessly or redownload any of your purchases at any time.
