Hello all, I am a 30-year-old SAHM from Dubai, UAE. I have been a lurker here for a while and decided I better get out of lurkdom if I needed to get my doubts cleared.

Good to be here!

Welcome!

You're from Dubai? Wow. Incredible place. Haven't been there (of course) but have read much about it. Is it as amazing as it seems?

friends moving back from there soon

Hey I understand that most people in Dubai are from somewhere else, is that really the case? welcome from around the world in Minnesota, where most people are from here, it is actually starting to be come a destination so it isn't all bad here. Still kinda wish I were in Dubai.

Welcome to MDC!

What's life like over there?

I used to have an English friend who worked in Dubai and he loved it there. The only other thing I know about Dubai comes from a Discovery Channel episode about the fabulous luxury hotel there and the other man made island residences that are being created.

Oh cool! I was raised in Dubai (from age 2 till almost 18). Welcome!

I've been trying to find the time off late to research as much as I can about the birthing support in Dubai. My best friend is soon to birth her first baby (next month) and I'm getting a bit anxious about what she can expect in labour and immediate PP care. I guess it depends what hospital and Dr. she has, but it's not easy to find intervention stats. etc.. I just really hope she has a positive experience.

Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent, but I suppose most can understand the anxious questions from a concerned friend!

I hope you have fun here

Ooooh, would you be okay with passing the link along to me so I can pass it on to my friend? Would it be too odd if I tried joining too? It would be interesting (:

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome.

Ellen, Dubai is a great place and it's growing leaps and bounds everyday.

thisiswhatwedo, you are absolutely right. Dubai's major population is made up of expatriates. I myself am from India.

Neveryoumind, that's cool. Thanks once again.

Bookgoddess, yep you are bang on right. The world's only 7-star hotel which is the Burj Al Arab and the Palm Islands have put Dubai prominently on the world map. Add to it the tallest building called the Burj being constructed and you have a winner, ladies and gentlemen!

Siana, I wanted to have a water labor/delivery and so I went back home to India for my delivery. I couldn't find anything here plus the medical expenses here are sky-rocketing so I couldn't afford it even if they had one. Hope your friend finds a good doc and hospital. The good ones I know of are in Jumeirah.

Lukesmom, you leave next door I am not a part of that group but it sounds fun. Hope to find out more.

Thanks once again all.

Nirvana4freedom, I'm sorry to hear that you had to go back to India to even have the possibility of the birth you wanted (where did you go in India to birth? I was born in Lucknow and we barely escaped a Cesarean). It makes me shudder to think what my friend might go through in Dubai.

Here in Canada water birth is not encouraged, though some midwives will allow it for home births. The College of Midwives apparently is not okay with it because it's difficult to guage the loss of blood (erm, check for concentrtion based on colour), but I'm sure have other reasons. In hospital, water births are not allowed (labouring to a point is). I hope you got the birth you hoped for

I spoke with my friend this morning because I hadn't heard from her in a while. She has placenta previa and is admitted in Al Wassel Hospital (near/in Karama) She's been there for 3 weeks and her Cesarean is scheduled in 4 weeks, well before she would go in to labour. If baby's heart rate becomes unstable though, she could go in any minute for surgery. She is understandably nervous.

Do you know of any place in Dubai that sell Stretchy wraps like Moby or CuddlyWrap _or_ guaze wraps like GyspyMama (more suited to the summer temps.)? Kangaroo care is a very real possibility for her, and if her baby isn't admitted, then baby and mama will still benefit from it's use.

Not sure what else I can do for her from this distance. I just feel so sorry for her because her birth plan was so different from this, but it's a necessary intervention. Guess I'll be hanging around in the birthing sub-forum for a while because I hope to pass on a few resources to make the best of the situation.
