Pineapple is said to induce labor as well. Pineapple, as well as papaya and mango, contain a proteolytic enzyme called bromelain. When bromelain is consumed with meals, it assists in the digestion of proteins.

When taken on an empty stomach, bromelain acts medicinally as an anti-inflammatory agent. Therefore, naturopathic medicine uses this enzyme to reduce pain and swelling.

The mechanism by which pineapple contributes to inducing labor might be the proteolytic action of bromelain. Bromelain might help to soften the connective tissue of the cervix and, thus, bring on labor.

Because bromelain is destroyed in the production process of canned pineapple, you should consume only fresh pineapple flesh if you are trying to induce labor with pineapple.

Note to self.....as yummy as fresh pineapple sounds right now I think I'll pass on it for a couple of weeks! These contrax are starting to worry me and I don't want anything to help them along!

I can't stand pinapple. Never have been able to. But mango, now that sounds heavenly right now...maybe some mango pinapple juice...doubt I'll find it fresh, but it sure sounds good. ooo ooo ooo Jamba Juice....mmmmm :

I ate pineapple my entire pregnancy with dd who was born at 42w. I loved it, and clearly it didn't work as a labor inducer

Fresh pineapple has been my top craving for weeks, and it's been on sale at the local supermarket so I've been indulging without having to pay too much. It seems like you'd have to eat a lot for those proteins to somehow make it into the cervix. :-) Most proteins get broken down before they leave the digestive system.

hmmm... I hear some pineapple juicing coming up...

Oh man, I might have to run down to the farmers market today! Not to induce labor but that sounds SO yummy right now!

Not in your DDC, but I ate fresh pineapple yesterday with my lunch. It was only about 3/4 to 1 cups worth. I had no idea! I guess I'll stay away from it in the future.

diamond lil, I wouldn't worry about that small amount. It takes a LOT to do anything. There's an "herbal abortion" site out there which is quoted as saying it can take 5-6 whole, fresh pineapples.

Well, yeah, eating 5-6 whole pinapples would make anyone go into labor! YICK! That's a whole lotta pineapple in one sitting.

haha that's funny, I have been craving pineapple and mango for the past few weeks. We have made lots of yummy fruit salads with them both and both of them are also on my list of things to ask for when people ask me what I need for baby..."ummm the baby doesn't need anything but mommy needs pineapple and mango"!!!

I love pineapple, but man-- imagine what the inside of your mouth would be like after that (not to mention the rest of your body)!

Maybe you go into labor because your stomach is so heavy from eating that much pinapple that it literally shoves the baby out???

Chantel...how are the dynamic duo doing?

my mouth would be one giant blister.

Wow! Water gives me terrible acid reflux I can't imagine what the juice of 5 pineapples would do to me!!

I might just have to pull out my juicer...

No kidding, eh?! Yikes!

I have been eating pineapple here and there but mostly b/c I've been craving it and it's finally a decent price at the store. My MW does recommend it as a "natural" induction method but since I only do a ring or two here and there, I *highly* doubt it's doing anything.

I ate it in desperate attemps with DD. I was dilated 2 more cm at my next appt a couple days later, but who knows. Didn't make things go any sooner or faster for me though.

I've been eating a ton of pineapple during this pregnancy, been craving it alot along with papaya, which is also very high in proteolytic enzymes. And I'm so not even dialated.
