Holy cow! It's just a pillow!

I am having a bit of sticker shock right now. I really need to get a contoured neck pillow, but I just cannot buy any of the ones that have formaldehyde and CFCs. So far, it seems that the only pillow out that is 'safe' is the Tempur Pedic. Ummmm, they start at $85! Does anyone know if there's such a thing as a SALE on these things? This is gonna be pretty hard to swallow.

A number of years ago I bought a real, brand name Tempurpedic pillow off of Ebay for about $40. I just ran over there and checked, and there are some priced even less than that.

So, you really can get one for WAY less than the list price.

Good luck!

Have you looked into buckwheat pillows? I think my DH got his for about $40 and they move to conform with your head without all the nasty plastic crap.

I'm not sure at all about whether IKEA items would contain that, but I would think that they do not, since there seems to be a bit more to safety laws that actually make sense in Sweden, yk?

I'm curious about it, so if anyone knows for sure...

Anyway, we got a contoured pillow from IKEA a bit over a year a ago for $20. I thought $20 was a lot to pay for a pillow! (I'm really weird about my pillows, I like them flat and folded, so cheap is usually better for me!)

Anyway, we need new bed pillows and I would like another contoured pillow. Keep us updated!

Here's where dh got his buckwheat pillow from: http://www.beans72.com/beans72/0-Pillows.htm

Used for generations by the Japanese, these firm pillows gently conform to the sleeper's head, lending support in all the right places. Know to relieve common sleeping problems such as; tension, muscle pain, stiff neck, headache and stress will conform and adjust perfectly to your head, neck, and spine. Will NOT collapse like foam. The buckwheat hulls allow air to circulate throughout the pillow. Cooling it off quickly.

I placed an order with them. betterforbabies.com shows children's size contour pillows but doesn't appear to have any in stock. I email Leah for more info regarding them.

I am thinking maybe we'll try a few of these a little later too. I just need to make sure we don't have any allergies to buckwheat.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure you could save a fortune by just making a buckwheat pillow yourself. Health food stores often sell buckwheat in the bulk section. Going by the info on the link above, you could just make your own pillow to these specs:

Queen Size Buckwheat Pillow

20" x 30"

10.5 - 12.5 lbs

I have a contour foam pillow and don't use it. I just don't like it... too stiff or something and it tends to slide out from under my head.

I do have a buckwheat pillow though and LOVE it. It molds to the shape of your head, it breathes... just great. I'd highly recommend one.

My DH mentioned seeing a "new" type of pillow at the chiropractors too. It's a Water Pillow. I think he said it ran about $50.

Just make sure that you use buckwheat HULLS for this, not the buckwheat grains.

That makes more sense to me now. I was thinking that would be a pretty uncomfortable pillow. I checked out the UNFI catalog and they don't appear to sell that in bulk. Otherwise, that sounds like a really smart idea. Now I guess I'll just have to check into where one could buy bulk hulls. I wonder if that's even possible.

well, that took about 2 seconds. http://www.zafustore.com/buckwheathull.html

I imagine you could just buy plain pillowcases and fill them up and sew 'em shut.

ETA: It doesn't look like you save anything doing it yourself though. If you want to get into the pillow making business you can buy hulls by the ton. http://www.nysaes.cornell.edu/hort/f...Buckhulls.html
