For my birthday, my friend jokingly asked me if I wanted ink cartridges for my printer and then was shocked when I said I thought that was a great idea, beacuse I could always use them and they costs so much.

We do practical around here a lot too. I try and balance it with some small fun things too but mostly it's practical stuff.

My kids were really excited to get new socks for Christmas!

What about a donation in your name to your favorite charity? I love these types of gifts because everyone benefits. Maybe something from Oxfam?

We really don't have $$ for that kind of thing right now.. We work with a non-profit (volunteer) and tons of our money goes that direction. That's pretty much our whole "charity" budget.

I agree. I'd get excited about a vacuum cleaner LOL

I know what I want for mothers day....a cleaning service to come in and deep clean the areas I just don't have the energy for.

I honestly want a vacuum cleaner!
We've been using a full size ShopVac for over a year and a half now and I am absolutely sick of dragging it around the house and up and down two flights of stairs.
I don't care that we plan to put central vac in within the next 5 years or if I end up with a 2nd hand vacuum cleaner. I just want one!

Oh, I just assumed that if you were talking jewelry or electronics, that $18 wouldn't be outrageous. My apologies! I'm not one for geegaws, so I tend to love Oxfam's practicality. Good luck deciding on your gift!

We don't do mother's day around here. Or father's day. We usually just go to a park and spend time together or something. This year, I've asked for a Maya wrap because I really want one! we'll see if I get it though

It's more a matter of spending the $$ on something that will actually get used hence skipping the jewelry and only wanting practical electronics...

As a rule we don't donate $$ to charities. We do time instead Just our personal choice.

Since you don't even know what you want, that leads me to believe maybe you don't really need anything in particular, so I would also suggest reconsider donating to a charity. I'm sure there are plenty of charities that would have no problem deciding how to spend a little extra money.

honestly.....i want my baby girl for mother's day.

and normally, mother's day for me is a day to eat a wonderful breakfast and spend time with my kids. flowers to plant outside are never unwelcome, but again.......i'd rather have the gift of my daughter this year (it would be 39 weeks....that's possible, right?!)

i completely agree! when we found out that lo's edd was may 12th i immediately said "awww...i want a mother's day baby!" i am also birthing at a birth center and a sunday birth (dd was born on a sunday) usually means that you have the whole place to yourself...no clients coming in for appointments or anything. what a great mother's day gift!

My family used to NEVER get me anything! Which was fine, they made me breakfast etc. which is what I want anyway. BUT the past couple of years I have been specifically telling them that I want organic bath products. They have been doing that now. I think they needed direction before and it's stuff that I really like and it's kinda motherly/girly so it fits the occasion. We are not really big gift givers around here. I don't usually do gifts for their birthdays--I usually just have spent all our money on their party! I do make them special dinners and cake on their birthdays though. For Christmas I am able to get by on less than $10 per kid so I have never expected to get anything from them for Mother's Day.

Thanks for the idea, really But as a matter of course we don't donate $$ to charities. Just the way we work things.

We actually don't do gifts for Mother's Day or Father's Day, preferring instead to spend the day doing family-type stuff (parks, museum, picnic, etc).

Well,
My DH just asked me what I wanted and after much thought I decided on a pair of comfy slippers.... I have had the same pair of slippers for the past 10 years...yikes....so I really do need another pair(I live in slippers during the day).
I like practical gifts too but I have to say it's so nice to get the occassional bouquet or sweet card-my DH knows this so every once in awhile he gets me a small something just for the heck of it.

Sorry that I've barged into your DDC...but of course, now that I'm butting in...I saw this thread in Green Living that might be of interest:

I'm really practical about gifts, and I tend to ask for stuff that I'd probably not spend money on, but I could really use or would really like (like a magazine subscription, a massage (!!!), or something of a personal splurge like a haircut).

My heart's desire? My little boy being born.

Material heart's desire? A Dyson vac... But they are way too much $$$ for us right now.

Really I think I'm going to ask DH to clean our car inside and out, it's a chore neither of us want to do but we both want done before the babe arrives.

Well.... I'll forgive you THIS time... Thanks for the link!

And I'm in the same boat- stuff I won't spend the $$ on but I might really want or even really kind of need, but seems too frivolous to spend money on day to day...

My husband and Father-in-law just did this for me last week, and it is soooo awesome. It took HOURS though. I am going to try REALLY hard to keep it this clean (especially inside) because it's nice! They also fixed the broken seatbelt in the back that we will need in a few weeks here ; )
