Muddy Dingoes bring May Flowers! - Page 48

Just jumping in for a minute from work to go public on a decision I'm wrestling with and ask for advice.
Do y'all think I could run the Chicago Marathon (Oct 12) this year and have time to do the long runs? I have a good base right now, having just done the half 4 weeks ago, and have a friend who is running it and willing to long run with me. I would be running for Team in Training, and that is my other sticking point - the minimun fundraising for Chicago is $2200. Now, I happen to know a lot of docs, so I think that is probably do-able for me, but still it makes me a bit nervous. I've always said that I would delay marathon training a few years for when my kids were a bit older, but the opportunity is there and knowing I've been training so well this year makes it hard to pass it up. So what do y'all think?

It's nice to find some running-Mama friends here, isn't it? I think there are only 2 of us in my IRL women's running group here. Mostly grad students w/o kids or mamas with older kids. You can make it work!

JenLove ~ great hair! There is a woman at my Y with dreads down to her butt. She wraps them up in a huge cloth to workout.

Megs ~ I need to find a Nordstrom here. Maybe there is one in Indy.....

I am enjoying the silence as both DDs are asleep and DS is at a friend's house. I need to fold a mountain of clothes though. I ran 3.2 miles this morning. I'm finding that my knees actually hurt less if I run every day, just a little bit. Maybe it keeps them lubricated or something. I've been doing short 2-4 mile runs daily and am really enjoying it. Tomorrow is long run day with my women's group, and I think we've got 6 or 7 miles scheduled.

The laundry is calling!

JayGee - where are you in IN? I remember you mentioning McCormick's Creek Park - my dad used to go there all the time as a kid - he is from Terre Haute.

mama crane - welcome! I think 26 and change for a 5K is great! Esp if you are doing all of your running on the TM. I second (or third or fourth) the idea of getting out on the road when possible. I run on the TM sometimes but it is soooo different!

doctorjen...I am inclined to say Go For It on the marathon, if you are motivated! It's a great time to do it.

drjen~GO FOR IT!!!!!!
mama crane~ Welcome aboard! You'll find tons of support, advice, and just plain friendly chitchat here. I the dingoes!!! And yeah, 26+ is pretty darn good for a 5k. I just did my first 5k (been doing a lot of longer distance stuff, half-marathons, 4 and 5 milers) and I was ecstatic to be under 27 minutes. I agree that if you can get out on the road to run, even just once a week it will help. I think the rule of thumb is generally not to train for anything longer than a 10k on a treadmill, so you're right at the limit.

towson~His bday is today, but the party is tomorrow. And yeah at the muffin top song!

jaygee~There's a Nordies at Circle Center. I Nordies! I don't know how I ever shopped for shoes or bras before I found them.

So, we went to the zoo, and I'm glad we did. DS was acting fairly normal, although a little cranky, by the time decision-time came around, and the fever hasn't reappeared so far. The decision was kind of two-fold: 1) I don't think he's contagious from whatever it is (my guesses...flare up of his sinus infection or teeting), I warned all our friends that were meeting us, and I figured if he was exhausted he could always fall asleep in the stroller and 2) I probably would have ended up bashing my brains in if I had been stuck at home all morning with wet carpet and a cranky toddler. When he's cranky, he does SO much better out of the house with something to distract him. You can only watch so much of the Wiggles! He did really well. He did get pretty crabby toward the end but we were getting close to nap time anyway. He passed out cold within seconds of hitting the crib!

Now I'm once again trying to find the motivation to get the things done that HAVE to be done tonight. The problem is the carpet is still wet enough that I can't really put things back on the floor and I can't really clean the living/dining room up very well until I can do that. And the other problem is that I can't start decorating the cake because I realized after DS had fallen asleep that I only have salted butter and I need unsalted to make the frosting. And I'm exhausted from only getting 3 interrupted hours of sleep last night. :yawning: I really hope I'm not up that late tonight! Send me some quick/easy cake decorating vibes, y'all!

Does anyone have a fabulous, pretty quick and easy recipe for pasta salad?

ETA: drjen~ Do you really think the dingoes are gonna tell you anything other than GO FOR IT?! I think it sounds doable, especially if you have a training partner. If I wasn't so obsessed with triathlons and had time to train over the summer, I would probably seriously consider a fall marathon.
drjen~GO FOR IT!!! I ran a half the same time you did and I'm running my first marathon on October 11th. We could be Dingo training partners! I'm doing Hal Higdon's novice program and it starts June 9th.

School is done! Dance recital in 2 hours!

Going to a babyshower tomorrow. A totally, like, Atlanta style thingy. I"m so totally rotten and am only going cause it's at one those fancy schmancy neighborhoods and all the breakfast food is coming from Whole Foods. : I know I am totally vain and shallow! I have no idea why I was invited, as I'm not really friends with the Mom. I try to stay away from her because she scares me!

Oh, and I'm so running tomorrow!!!! Can't wait!

Next week I can do some more personals.

DrJen, I would say go for it! I have been seriously thinking about it, too. But, DH is still a little freaked about last year's Chicago marathon. I need to ease him into the idea of a marathon, I think.
DrJen, DO IT! You already trained for the half... keep it going. I agree the fund raising is hard. I was suposed to do a lengthy ride to benefit MS studies and couldnt go because I didn't raise the money. I really have no one to ask though.... short of going door to door.

I ran 11 today, but boy was it hot! I did it mid day since DH was home and it was over 90 in the sun and I didn't bring any fluid. I still managed to finish and average 8:22 miles, but my last mile was almost a 10 minute mile. I wanted to quit so badly, but I just have a hard time deviating from my schedule.

I really don;t get the scale. I have been holdin gsteady up and down teh same lb for about 6 weeks. Then the last 2 days, the scale shows a 4-5 lb loss... I don't get or trust it, LOL. I'll take it, but I need to work really hard to make sure the loss sticks.... Oh, I double checked on teh gym scale yesterday and today.. lost 2 lbs there too each day. I'm skeptically psyched

We live in Bloomington, Nancy.

DrJen ~ I second (third? fourth?) the support for a fall marathon. I'm going to have to live vicariouly through you and all the others bold enough to go 26.2. My knees can't handle more than a 1/2.

Did my 15 mile bike tonight. I was so tired, and it was so windy, but it's done.
DrJen -- in my best Rob Schneider ala "Waterboy" voice -- "You can dooooo iiiiiit!" Run that marathon!

I've been kickin' around the Portland marathon, which is also in the fall...?

Hmmm. Some of the women in the 2nd year of my program are starting to train for it next week... but they are girls I don't particularly like, soooooo... it would be me on my own, eh? And I'm barely in 5K shape right now!

ETA: a while back, someone posted a link to a cross-training (the REAL KIND) friendly marathon training plan (i.e., one that included a lot of cycling). Can I get that again? Mid-week cycling might be better for me than a mid-week longish run...

Yeah, so it's 2:15 am and I am not in bed yet. However, the cake is done (and looks pretty good, I think), and the kitchen and the rest of the house (except for the office) is sparkling clean.

DS has been crying on and off for half an hour or so. I went in and sang to him (about 20 verses of 99 bottles of beer on the wall...the only LONG song my tired brain can remember right now ) and thought he was settled down. He's definitely tired, I don't know why he won't give up and go to sleep. If he won't sleep, that means I won't sleep tonight either. :yawning:

Things I learned while decorating DS's cake tonight:
*Cakes that SEEM like they should be relatively easy to decorate probably aren't.
*A double recipe of buttercream frosting fits in my kitchenaid mixer. Barely. Except not really.
*If you need 7 different colors of frosting for your cake, only having one pastry bag, one coupler, and one of each tip makes for a major PITA...washing and drying between each color. :
*Nobody is going to appreciate the time and effort I put into making the stupid thing except me most likely! Oh well...

Off to see if I can get DS to go back to sleep. Again. And hope that he doesn't get up for good before 7.
tjsmama~He's probably overtired. And you too, Wonder Woman. I mean 7 different colors of icing, seriously? I hope you guys have a GREAT party and get lots of rest tonight and tomorrow. (Yeah, I also have to admit that your pride over making the cake, and a darn good one too, will probably make you enjoy the party even more. Have fun!)

megs~Ummmm, should we just start right in with the marathon boot? The pack aspect of a Dingo really shows when someone questions signing up for a race. Eh, I say "GO FOR IT!!!!!"

Why does getting up so bloody early for a run alway seem like such a better idea the day before? I'm heading out now to meet my marathon training buddy for a 6-mile run. Hardly seems worth getting up early for BUT today is our big community yard sale so I have to be back as early as I can to help poor DH.
don't get on here much, but i am heading out to a 5K this morning and I woke up early so I have some time to kill. I have heard that there are so many runners that it is hard to pace yourself as fast as you want to the first mile, so we will see if my time improves at all. This is my second 5k ever, the last one was about a year ago and I didn't train at all. I haven't been doing a lot of training per say for this one, but I have been consistently running this year.
tjs, Isn't it amazing how much work things like that are! Have funthough!

rr: I really want to get in another 7 or 8 miles this week, but we'll see how it goes. DH is racing and I am trying to set up a babysitter, but it isn't working well.

Good news though... I will be doing the NYC Half Marathon on July 27. I really wanted to get into it and get another half under my belt around that time. I did my last half in 1:45 and would live to tke a lot of time off of that! DH is racing on Sat. in PA, so that will be the only complication.

Our kids think we are nuts, btw. They always think we are going to a race. Yesterday I was eating a Gu before my run and ds1 (3 years) says, "You're eating Gu mom? Can I have some." Hm, my toddlers know what Gu is.
JenLove! I envy your dreads. : AND, thank you! I am still entirely uncertain about Germany, since dh can't seem to get the idea into his head that we should ever go anywhere without the kids. I would not take them. BUT also, it will be into the school year. You'll have stuff going on then, won't you? btw, do you ever go down to Bay Beach? That's a family favorite for us, and 'twould be fun. We pack a picnic and have a nice afternoon there.

Of course, I would still just dig it if you came to hang and meet us. LMK if you ever need to come down for a multi-day stay in the Fox Cities and need a crash pad. Space is one thing we have. Breakfast is another.

Dh is home. I locked him out yesterday (oops), but he broke in and managed to play outside all afternoon anyway.

I am going to run today (outside, I think) and I am going to try, for the first time in forever, to get up early and go longer tomorrow. I need to see if I can run 10 mi. I did 8 two weeks ago, so I am fairly confident I can...but to do it is another thing.
morning y'all!

I just finished a good run....the same distance as last week (8.5) but four minutes faster! and a good 10 degrees hotter....oh well, at least I'm getting ready for the Peachtree. I didn't really want to do it but I made myself, bc I'm not sure how much running I can do over the next three weeks or so. And of course, I'm glad I did!

drjen, I have NO doubt that you could do a marathon and it would be awesome! you are in great shape right now! the fundraising is another matter....but $2200 actually doesn't sound like it would be too difficult. I raised $1000 without even really trying for my marathon...people want to give to good stuff to support you. Esp all those docs!

must go EAT!
