Bleeding Question

Okay, yesterday I had an appt with my CNM and he did my GBS test and also checked my cervix. He said "you're bleeding. have you been bleeding?" and I said "ya, a little bit" so while he was checking me he said he was moving the baby's hand out of the way because it was by the head... to me it sure felt like he was stripping my membranes. He was moving his hand very much in a sweeping manner and very quickly & roughly.

Now... I find it weird that he would do this at 36w 3 days but that's what it seemed like he was doing. Did he do this because I'm 4 cm dilated, having lots of false labor & having bleeding? Would he do it w/o telling me what he did? I didn't ask because I assumed he would've said but I had strong suspicions that's what he did and even if it wasn't technically on purpose I have a hard time imaging that it wouldn't have happened anyway with all the movement of his hand.

Today I'm having LOTS of bloody mucus but it's not really plug like because it's solid dark red. Is that bad or is that normal after a sweep?

Also, I just threw up out of nowhere. Should I worry about that??

SORRY about the errors but the kids are distracting me.

I have no idea what he did, but I would certainly feel uncomfortable and not fully informed in your position. Hope you get some answers.

Yeah I am uncomfortable with him not being straightforward about it. I can always use the other midwife in the practice because I've been seeing both at the same time anyway and I seem to click better with her.

I have no idea

I do hear all the time how women get internals done and the ob or midwife strips the membranes without asking first. I hope that wasn't the case for you.

hopefully it WAS just him moving the hand. does sound suspicious though and your symptoms do too.

The OB I had with my first striped my membranes without telling me first : I was so mad. He was doing an internal and I felt a lot of pain then the told me he had striped my membranes, that was at 40 weeks. That along with many other things he did made me change OB's right after C was born.

I can't remember if I bled afterwards or not.

If you're not comfortable with what he did I would see the other one that you click with.

This might be a silly question...but how and why would he move the hand?

Sounds like we have the same due date.

Are doctors actually able to reach up through your cervix (and amniotic sac) and move a hand away from baby's head? That just sounds strange -- maybe after your waters had broken...

I'm sorry that happened to you. My GBS test will consist of me swabbing myself. I really don't want any VEs until labor, and maybe not even then. I have never had anything good come from them. It definitely sounds like him "fiddling" around in there -- whether it was to actually move something around or whatever -- has caused something.

Hang in there!

This sounds suspicious. You shouldn't be having dark red blood and moving the hand away from the head makes NO sense to me, at all.

What is the problem with the hand being there, especially since you aren't in labor? Your baby is perfectly capable of moving her hand. I would call the other midwife and ask her to explain why this was done and what the deal is with the bleeding.

I'm sorry that happened to you.

Yeah... I don't know how he felt the hand up there but my water is definitely still in tact and I can reach through my cervix and feel the head very easily.

I honestly don't know WHAT the problem is with the hand being there. I told him that DS2 was born with his hand next to his head and he was out in two pushes.

It does sound like maybe he was sweeping your membranes. That dark bleeding you shouldn't get from a simple cervix check. And why he would feel the need to push that hand away...I have no idea.

It seems very odd that he would "move the baby's hand" - if I were you, I would call and ask about this. Something just does not sound right.

What do I ask?

Yeah, he kept saying "just trying to move that hand, she's being stubborn".

I agree that things sound odd here. I can't wrap my brain around why anyone would give you a sweep before you're even 37 weeks though.

I'm also concerned because if he DID he did it before I even had my GBS results back and now I'm reading about how dangerous it is to have a sweep while GBS+.

Arg.

Is it custom to move baby's body parts during VEs? If not, why would OB be concerned with this at 36 weeks? If it is customary, what would be the concern to do this?

I would ask OB and also the MW you like. That's just me, but like I said it just seems off

You could ask what your medcal record says occured during your visit, you can even request a copy of it if you want. He might not have written anything but I think it would be worth checking into.

are you still bleeding?

:

I would call and just be straight forward and ask, "You know, I just have to ask if you stripped my membranes when you gave me a VE, as I'm quite concerned about it since I'm not even 37 weeks yet."

How is the bleeding now? Hope all is well, mama.

No more bleeding.
Maybe he was trying to move the hand thinking the round head would help dilate you better and the bleeding was just from irritation? I guess time will tell..... are you ready??

So more bloody mucus today. Not plug like, mucus completely reddened with blood. How long does this go on for?
