And three cheers to you. It takes a lot of guts to vote with your feet and find a new job!!

.

Compare that with a story I heard of a mom in for 6 wk pp c-section visit. She wanted to nurse her twins BEFORE her visit, asked the front desk staff for an empty room, and was told : we can't do that :.

It was such an awesome moment to see a mom nursing THREE babies, I gave her a huge hug on the way out and told her to keep up the good work. She said "Oh, I have no choice, they all LOVE mommy's milk" ! I hope she keeps it up.
That is a great story! I am smiling a big smile! Wow, that mom had some strength and devotion!

Oh My God! How horrible. That is just one reason so many women do not like OBs. The two I work for (mainly the husband) is so pro-breastfeeding. They have posters in every exam room, flyers and they don't hand out formula samples either. He was the one who taught me to nurse when I had my first daughter and his wife is a LLL leader. I swear they are midwives in disguise That saddens me that mom could not do that. I don't know how many times during the day, the two docs take breaks because mamas are nursing. It is a joke around the office because the docs are running behind because a mama has to nurse first, then the exam can continue I just think it is awesome a mom can come in with TRIPLETS, take up an entire hour in an exam room, then have the doc continue without being pressured in this day of "Hurry up, move the patient, move the patient out and get to the next patient." Not that way where I work at all, I love it. I don't mind leaving an hour late after work because it means a mom got taken care of and treated right, not pushed through the door, and shoved back out again. Ok, I will get off my soapbox now...

That's wonderful! Always great to hear of supportive doctors!

That is really nice. I remember going to the dentist to finally get a cavity filled that had been diagnosed right before I got pregnant, anyway I had to nurse DS about 5 times during the visit and they were so nice and waited each time and were generally very supportive. It is so rare and so appreciated when people make exceptions for a nursing mama. Good for you for encouraging her too!

that's great, nursing triplets needs a lot of support and encouragement, I couldn't imagine how much work that is! whooo

(did anyone ever see that Oprah episode where the woman bf'd sextuplets? she pumped for all six babies for six months until finally her body just gave out, absolutely amazing)

That's the way it should be. We should hear stories like this all the time, don't you think?
I'm lucky enough to work in the prenatal, midwife clinic for a major hospital in our area. we are going baby friendly We have a couple of really comfy Lazyboy chairs for our mamas if they want to nurse plus 3 lactation educators and one IBCLC (me) for assistance. There are also positive parenting classes and new mothere's support groups I never want to work anywhere else.

I think that is wonderful. I hope that mama has all the support in the world from her family and friends.

Yeah I agree. I had to work this weekend for my OB's office and I have been having MAJOR breast feeding issues (nursing strike and feeling very horrible about it!) and my OB could see I was not "into" my job (I was bawling my eyes out and just so stressed out because she won't nurse) so he told me to go, rest, pump and take the weekend off. Wish more bosses were like that!

Excellent story! Glad you and they found each other for your new job.

One thing I figured out very quickly was to NOT ask, not ever (well, okay, once at a friend's home, and I think she was wondering why I'd even ask). Baby never needs permission to eat, therefor, momma never needs to ask permission to feed.

That's great that they're so supportive, but why can't mom nurse the babies during the exams?

During the exam, her feet are usually in stirrups, which I would think would make it hard to nurse, especially tiny babies. I tried nursing my youngest at 6 months at an exam and I was too scared I would drop her because of the position I was in (almost flat on my back because I was in stirrups and he was doing a Pap on me..ok...TMI, sorry) And my OB likes to respect privacy of patients, so he probably stepped out so she could bare it all and nurse two at once would be my guess.

Ah, THAT kind of exam. That makes sense.

My gyno was one of my best friend's sisters, and I worked down the street from her when I was in high school, so I usually conned her into giving me a ride home at the end of the day (I was *way* too close to my gyno). Once I walked in, and she was holding one baby, the nurse was holding another, and the mom of the kids was breastfeeding a third. And one was sleeping in the carseat!

I was awestruck. FOUR babies, I think they were a month old or so, and she was BFing them all.
