Muslim baby dropping ritual

I saw the above link somewhere - can't remember where - might have been here, but not sure. It shows people dropping babies onto a mat from at least a story high. The clip says it is muslims. But the muslims I know IRL have never heard of this. Does anyone here know anything about this? I am truly curious as wto what is going on here.

I've never heard of this either before today.

But honestly, they may call themselves Muslim but nothing they are doing is from Islam. First of all, going to shrines is *not* permitted in Islam. It is a form of Shirk (giving 'partners' to God), which is THE biggest, only unforgiveable sin in Islam.

Second, it's haram (again not permitted) to believe in "luck" (good and bad) since we are to believe that everything happens by the will of God.

Third, it's a known principle that "There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm." and throwing a baby from a building is definitely harming it in some way, even if it's just scaring the poor thing to death.

I also posted on the news thread that got removed, but I just wanted to mention that in india, sometimes the line between culture and religion gets super blurred.

For example, hindu (indian) weddings and muslim (indian) weddings have a lot of rituals/traditions/practices in common even though they arent the same religion. And both may consider it part of their religion.

It's Indian culture and not all of it either, not religious culture, also this article says both Muslims and Hindus do it

Here in Norway in the news, they stated over and over again that it had NOTHING to do with religion, and it was done by both muslims and hindus. And maybe others too.

I wonder why they would state it was a muslim ritual in American media???

It is not from islam to believe in saints or things like that, and to believe statues, places or something can heal your infertility. Only GOD can heal! And to HIM only should we be thankfull!

As I recall they said it was a Hindu and a Muslim thing...it's merely cultural and NOT religious.

I'm Muslim and it sounded like some phreaky pre-Islamic thing that the Indians in that area/community who converted to Islam kept.

Yup! I've seen certain Muslim communities here in the states do things that arent really, technically from Islam and are NOT a part of the religion but are just from their culture or from before the people became Muslim, so like just becos a Muslim does something doesnt mean it's from Islam.

It's just something some people from one area do.

That seems like a huge violation of ahimsa. I don't understand all of Hinduism, but I would say that this is something that is completely removed from religion, as it violates the teachings of Islam and Hinduism.

Sorry to be too nitpicky, but the reporter, Sonia Legg, was definitely not American. She's actually British. Also, she did say Muslims and Hindus and not all Indians supported it, in her defense. I know Muslims don't get a fair shake in the media most of the time, I just thought I'd clarify this particular instance.
