How does your body respond to Mam Pads vs Disposables?

I've heard comments a couple times from people that they have shorter periods now that they use cloth pads vs disposable pads. And/or fewer cramps and other period related problems. I didn't start using cloth until after I went off Depo which I had been on for 7.5 years and I've not had a child. So I don't know if my change in cycles is do to BC and child birth, or from using cloth vs disposables.

So what I'm wondering is what have other peoples experiences been who have used both disposables and cloth. Did your cycles change at all?

When I was younger mine would be 7-8 days long and pretty heavy for most of it. Now it's still tends to go 6-7 days, but it's often one heavy day, one medium day, one or two light days and then 2-4 days of spotting where at the end you ask yourself if it's even worth wearing anything extra for it. But is it the difference in not being exposed to all the chemicals or is it just the normal changes of getting older and giving birth? I also don't get the killer cramps of old. But having a baby can reduce that problem too.

Hmm, don't know! My cycles seem about the same post kids. But I really like skipping all pads, and just using a cup! Well I do use a cloth panty liner for the first day or two as back-up (but Im getting better with the cup, so it's not as necessary now).

The only major difference, is the monthly rash I got with the disposables. I don't get that anymore.

Me too.

The cup has cut my period from six to three days. My friend thinks I'm insane, but I swear this has made a big improvement.

That's my big selling point on cloth. I don't get those rashes anymore either.

That's interesting about the cup. I've thought about getting one for swimming and such. But the few times I tried tampons I didn't like them.

I also don't get the rash that the disposible pads always gave me. When I used disposibles, I had horrible cramps. They were so severe that they would disrupt my sleep. My flow was also extremely heavy, filling 4-6 Stay Free overnight pads per day. My period would last 7-8 days. It would be heavy everyday except for the last day.

I've had two periods using the mama cloths, and I can see a huge difference. The first period was super, super light. I don't think that I have ever had a period that light before. There were only a handful of very mild cramps. My second period was heavier, but still not like on the disposibles.. I'd say it was half as heavy, maybe. The cramps were very mild, for only a few days right in the middle. My period lasted for 6 days.

So, for me, it seems that my cramps are pretty much gone, the flow is much lighter and no rashes.

I've been doing the diva cup/cloth pads for a few months now. I haven't noticed any difference in the length of my period or the flow. I do notice that there isn't the stinky disposable smell when the blood is on the pad and I like the feel of the cloth pads much better than the plastic ones. I'm hoping with more regular usage I will see a difference in the length/flow.

It was pretty nice not having to use any tampons or disposables this last month!

I've been using cloth pads for years now- I have not noticed a change in cycle but I when I was using disposables I'd get very itchy (sorry if TMI) whereas I don't at all anymore.

I didn't used to get any side effects from the disposables. However, having that plastic next to my skin seemed to create a more humid environment in that area (not exactly optimal for feminine health). The cloth pads don't trap moisture like that; they seem to breathe.

I switched to cloth pads last summer and was surprised to find that I no longer had any cramps and my period has been reduced from 5 days (3 heavy) plus a day or two of spotting to only 3 days (only 1 real heavy day) and one day of spotting. Plus no irritation and cloth is just so darn comfy - I don't even mind my period anymore.

My periods and cramps didn't change. I started using cloth pads 4 or 5 months ago perhaps.
Though it's more fun now, because I have nicely colored pads instead of boring bleached white

LOL I agree! I honestly enjoy picking out which pad to use each time. They are all so pretty and nice looking.

I have heard women say they noticed changes (shorter flow) when switching to cloth/cup, but I didn't believe it. That is, until I experienced it myself!

I've been using a combo of the Diva cup and cloth pads from New Moon pads, and I swear the difference has been remarkable. I was expecting my period to last 5-6 days as always, but it's down to about 3 days. I especially noticed when I use the cup...I was very surprised that when I took it out on day 3 of my cycle, there was barely anything in it...it's crazy and very disturbing...makes you wonder what exactly is in tampons and what they're doing to our bodies...

Mine are the same length, but have gone from extreme pain to none at all. Plus they are much more comfortable.

Does anyone know exactly what chemical in pads make us cramp or bleed more? I'd love to be armed with more knowledge in case the subject ever comes up.

That's totally been my experience as well.

Don't know exactly which chemical, but I was told the chemicals are use to draw the blood from us so we will need to change more often, hence using more of their junk.
Whereas when we use cloth or the Diva cup (which I still can't figure out how to put that thing in... ) the blood will come out as we pee or whatever we do (Sorry TMI)

I too truly enjoy my pads and love figuring which pad should I use for which day... my favorite patterns are usually use on the very last day or so.

I no longer have the rash and it is definitely much lighter than before.

I can see where this might have some validity. Because when I use disposables, the pad always had so much in/on it. But with cloth it seems like when I go to the bathroom there is a ton of stuff just dropping into the toilet. So I don't get nearly as much on the pads anymore.

I think my sister told me once that it's the same chemicals that are in disposable diapers.

In regards to tampons at least, this has been debunked. Go look around at Snopes.com

The whole concept makes no sense, since we're not bleeding from our vulvas--as in that is not the source of the blood and tissue.

All I've noticed is that the pattern of my periods has changed over the years, which is normal. There's no difference between when I'm home using cloth and out using tampon and disposable pad. If it's going to be a monster heavy day, it's going to be that regardless of what I'm using. If it's going to be a light day, then again, it's light regardless of what I use.

The only differences I've noticed in the years of using cloth, over 13 by now, is that I am more aware and can often (usually if I'm home) make it to the loo in time for nothing to be on my pad. This might make it seem like the bleeding is lighter, but it's not. The other difference is no irritation from trapped moisture and whatever that my sensitive skin might decide to be irritated by. I only get that now if we're out of town and I don't use the cloth at all.

No difference in length or flow. But yes, my skin is definitely more comfortable without that darned plastic... no itchies!
